I go out to the parking garage at my apartment to find my car was egged overnight by some worthless *insert explicative here*. I power washed the car right away, but the egg was already dried on so a good chance there's paint damage. I'll be taking it to a body shop after work to get it checked out.
Very sorry to hear this. If only you could catch them - just once would do.
Thanks and I would have loved to have caught them in the act. I just wish the complex had cameras in the parking garages. Time to invest in a remote camera for my parking spot.
Many of the new Dash Cams you mount in the car not only provide potential important information in case you are involved in an accident, but they also can bet setup to activate with motion detection around the car. That would likely catch the perps in the act on video.
BTW, the egg white contains an organic acid that (since you said it had dried) has almost certainly etched the clear coat on your car. It looks like hard water stains in hard light. You will have to have it buffed out. I bought my first Porsche with some egg etching on the hood. I got the car buffed at a pro shop, but they could never get all the etching out since it was so deep. I ended up having the hood repainted, but it was also heavily chipped, so a respray was in order.
Hope the etching is not too deep.
Do you have a link to a good one that detects motion and could have possibly helped in this instance?
One of my previous Mercedes CLK was like that when I bought it. Even after a professional detail including a deep buffing of the clearcoat, the damage was still there. I've got a feeling this will be the same. :-(
That's terrible, some people are animals.
You may want to consider a car cover. For one thing it can help to conceal that it's a Porsche (assuming you get one without a Porsche logo on it) and I think people would be far less likely to remove the cover in order to vandalize the car.
Man I am so sorry to hear about your experience. I know how it feels. Brand new black m3 a week old. Was parked on the driveway of the house I was renting. Entire door was keyed front to back. People are the worst.
hopefully this is an isolated incident and it buffs out!
Sucks! Sorry to hear.
Mike
may the perp be struck with a really bad case of food poisoning......
You're not nearly vindictive enough
Very sad to hear about ur experience. There r political groups training much of the population that successful people are doing it on the backs of the impoverished and that successful people should be punished. If u are deemed to be successful, those people hate u. I know because I have distant family biased that way, so I post no pictures of my Porsches on Facebook or other social media. I don't tell them I own one at those few times when I do visit them.
I've encountered those people as well. For some reason whoever did this targeted my vehicle and not the BMWs, Audis or Mercedes near my car. I can't think of anyone I upset or crossed recently. Oh well, such is life I guess.
Sure, in a sea of black, grey, and white SUVs, put a car cover on a low car - just a big target that say ... EXPENSIVE CAR UNDERNEATH. That won't attract attention
Damn, I hate vandals, sorry for you and your car. The trouble is the clear coat is now etched. What I did to my car that got egged (Grand Prix) was to use a Mr. Clean Magic Eraser to lightly sand down the etched surface then I hit it with rubbing compound and a rotary polisher (use lots of water too!). If your not comfortable doing any of this then off to the body shop.
Yeah, I'll be heading over to a body shop in a bit to get it checked out. Thankfully most of the egg was on the rear glass instead of paint, so I'm hoping there's minimal damage.
Fingerprints on the egg shells or were the perps throwing with gloves?
It's been my experience that police have too much more serious stuff on their plate and they won't do it. At least that's what Philly police told me some years ago when my new Porsche was broken into in a fancy hotel parking garage, and my radio and equalizer were stolen. I could see the perps" oily fingerprints on my perfect shiny black paint where they broke a window to get in and where they closed the doors (there were two of them), but the police told me on the phone they were too busy to come to my hotel and to take fingerprints. If I wanted to file a report for my insurance I had to go to the police station for that. It was too small a crime, they told me on the phone. Ughhh!
For motion sensing still shots, deer cameras are good and they are cheap and plentiful. Outdoor and hunting supply stores have a selection of them.
I feel for you OP. Don't know if it will help...but it could have been worse.
In 1997 I got one of the first batch of integra Type Rs in Canada. Among the Japanese car crowd, the arrival of the R was a pretty big deal, and I had the first one in town. It was three days old, and I had parked it in an underground garage and headed out to a local park to (believe it or not) to propose to my third wife and then go to dinner. When I got back to the garage, thieving vandals had taken a crowbar to the hatch to forcibly remove the rear wing...almost certainly to use as a template for making R wings for lesser Integras. In addition to replacing the wing and the hatch, both rear quarter panels were damaged and had to be repaired/repainted.
Whenever some lowlife enters my realm and messes with me or my stuff, I take consolation in knowing that a few weeks down the road, my stuff will be fixed and the incident put on the back shelf. The lowlife will almost certainly be a lowlife for the remainder of their days, and endure a lifetime of being robbed, cheated, and generally treated like the maggot they are by all the other lowlifes in their "social circle." It's not exactly "justice," but it is payback.
Agree, we had an incident in the neighborhood, some guy in a car was harassing a women, my neighbor started videoing the situation, and then the guy in the car tried to run him down. We all called the cops, but they never showed up to even view the video, since both the perp and woman fled. We have also called about drug dealers roaming around the neighborhood but again no show-go figure.
To the OP, (and I'm sure the body shop will have experience with albumen etching) both the clear coat and the glass will be etched While using warm water to remove the dried egg might be a good idea, as warm water to remove any type of nasty thing on your paint is more effective than using cold water, the etching has already taken place. You might not notice the glass etching although it will be similar to hard water stains on the glass. But I think you said the car was black, so you will notice the paint etching. Hopefully a strong professional buff will get it out. BTW saliva is also slightly acidic (because your mouth contains acidic bacteria to begin the digestive process) and so if someone spits on your car, you should wash it off and don't let it dry.
Certainly a good case for paint protection film... relatively easy to replace and in this case may even be covered by insurance.
I didn't think about that until I'd already cleaned off the car.
Now I wish i would have called the police about it.
Going back to anything dried onto paint. The best and least damaging approach to removing what's on the paint. Get a soaking wet cotton towel or wash cloth and tape it (or them) over the crud area and let the water soak into the dried egg or whatever. A little detergent or 409 well wet it faster but will obviously remove any wax or polymer polish on your car in that area. Just give it plenty of time to soak into that dried crud.
sorry to hear about this. After my cayman arrived, I installed 2 more Arlos around the house
After getting the car checked out, the only spot that had any damage was the passenger quarter panel. That was a series of scratches in a radial pattern from where one of the eggs shattered upon hitting the car. I guess that's better than etched paint everywhere else.
I love my Porsche Cayman, but I have noticed I am treated differently by everyone when I drive it. Even the slightest driving faux paus is met by extreme animosity. I realize the world has largely gone mad and this is probably jealousy, but man it is crazy.
I pulled in front of a guy last week, thought I had tons of space, but he was speeding. So I kicked it in and sped up quickly to the next car on the road. He had to speed up to catch me and would have been stopped by the car in front of me anyway, but he just about had a stroke screaming and yelling at me. He kept rushing up to my rear bumper and almost hitting me. I tapped my brakes to dissuade him and his head nearly exploded with rage. Then he pulled up next to me a couple lights down and began insulting me and calling me "a typical Porsche guy" whatever that means. We yelled at each other a minute and this 60 IQ man finally just drove away.
Then today I was at a 4 way stop and the vehicle across from me was a semi truck. He was turning left and I was going straight. We both went and of course I was faster and he was turning, but he just turned right into the intersection and tried to hit me.
I get cut off 15 times a day and I never get angry at anyone.
Do you guys get this too?
The responsibility of driving a nice car is 100 times that of a beater I guess.
No. And I also don't get people in pickup trucks rolling coal when I'm in my Prius.
I get cut off 15 times a day and I never get angry at anyone.
Happens more in the Spyder than my Ford, I guess it's subtle passive / aggressive: "you'll adjust somehow, you won't want to muss up your sports car". Additionally, everyone wants "to go" like you're all the sudden Mr. Josey Wales in that Porsche and we want to see your pistolero efforts. People are vandalizing sports cars and jacking drivers near me so I am very choosy of where I drive it.
We yelled at each other a minute and this 60 IQ man finally just drove away.
I get cut off 15 times a day.
Are you sure that you aren’t part of the problem?
I haven't noticed any animosity towards me when I'm driving my Cayman; what I get mostly is people wanting to prove that they're faster than me. I always let them. What's the point of getting into a pissing contest? I don't feel like I have anything to prove to anyone. (Besides, some of them are legit faster; from a dead stop, going in a straight line, there's no way I'm going to outrun a Hellcat or a C8, and I don't even try.)
Right after I got the
Spyder
I was cruising with my cousin (a city detective at the time). A group of motorcycles were doing crazy things at high speed, stoppies and more. Anyhow, he says, "can you get close to those guys, I want to get some visual on the bike, maybe a plate #". OK So licensed to speed? I caught them (which means they aren't very good riders or perhaps their sphincters tighten on a bike in triple digits, rightfully so). Anyhow, they started getting more crazy, I thought for sure one would wipeout and die. I backed way off once he got the info he wanted. The crazy of youth, I let them pass me too Kevin.
"With great power comes great responsibility" .
If you enjoy creating the story where you crushed a Porsche with your old civic, what do I care? Had I owned this ride at 18? I'd be dead or in jail.
Not much traffic here and I get an occasional thumbs up when driving, so its not a problem for me.
Ha! I got crushed by a Civic just yesterday!
I'm not sure, that is sort of the reason I made this post. But I also regularly drive a
Toyota
and a Ford and this never happens to me. I am not perfect and I don't always drive perfect, but I never purposely drive like an asshole. It just seems like as soon as I get in the Porsche I am not given an inch of slack and so many drivers seem hostile and they are just waiting to drive at me or tail gate me.
Maybe the Porsche makes me drive differently? My car is superior to 99% of the rest of the cars on the road. Maybe the world is filled with envious louts as well. I'm just not sure.
Yes this only happens to me when I drive in the dirty city. I wouldn't ever go there but for work.
