He is checking the throttle pedal plate fixings etc., but apparently you need a very small amount of slack in the cable to stop the pedal opening fractionally at idle and buggering things up.

Leather wipes clean... I wouldn't want to go badger baiting in a 968 CS as those cloth seats are a lot less forgiving PS Terry, I found a Hallmark card that is just a paper replica of your reg plate... if you email me your address off forum I will send it through to you. Thom - the M5 engine may be quite nice in an Ult if it was up to 500bhp Ascari spec, but Chevy iron is a lot cheaper and easier to fit. I'm sure he won't part with it once it nestles between the suspension turrets of the 3 series! Cheers Dom

Dom! You'll be bringing the Red Baron to play with Big Red at the Silverstone do? FANTASTIC! If we're in different sessions do you fancy exchanging rides - we'll be in the right environment this time! Woohoo! Silverstone's Badger Population - be afraid, very afraid...

POST 10Original post

Good news Dom! So when are you going to buy back that Nova you used to have when you were 17? I'm sure it's seen some changes as well!

POST 11Original post

God help us all! Exposure to Domster sermons 'sans Baron' was an effect not dissimilar to Torquemada being told by a rogue Franciscan monk that he had mistakenly taken an unholy allegiance with the boy Lucifer. Von Doblensk plus said WWI fighter ace is akin to a full scale claim of heresy absolute against the mother Inquisition herself. Domster: the loon for all seasons. Avonites salute thee but the hedge dwellers? May their paws carry them safely yonder.

POST 17 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

He is checking the throttle pedal plate fixings etc., but apparently you need a very small amount of slack in the cable to stop the pedal opening fractionally at idle and buggering things up.

POST 18Original post

Nice one Domster,it looks like a good trade to let someone else do all that work before you get it back. Very pleased for you,,I was always suprised at your insistence of the 964 RS pedigree when you had let one go in favour of the E36 hybrid. totally agree on the learning to drive the car,I have had some instruction, but experience of 9 years of 911 has been a great education...I could immediately drive at similar speeds in the 968 Cs after a few hours as my rear engined car. All this tuning lark on a 2wd 911 is for ego boosting unless you actually have the ability to make use of it. Not that there is anything wrong with that of course.

POST 19 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Cheers CS. I have had about 9 months' of 911 experience, as mainly driven other people's 911s, not owned one solidly before this. Could hustle it in the dry nicely, the RS flatters you... but in the wet I quickly started to run out of talent. The Lotus Carlton in falling snow was more manageable Still, it lets you grow with the car and taming it should be fun - on airfields and well aware from the badgers

POST 20Original post

Is the Silverstone track day July 25th? I might just be tempted to bring Scaramanga along...... once Colin has fitted an engine to him, and assuming I don't crash him in the meantime.

POST 21Original post

Congratulations on the return of the Baron Domster - has anything been done about those nasty holes that appeared in the airbox? Does anyone know if the PCGB trackday at Silverstone is open to non-Porkers (or even non-PCGB members)? If there are a bunch of PHers there I could be tempted to come along and play....

POST 22Original post

ha ha ha, just seen this thread mate. I knew you two were meant to me reunited... And yes, the BM was a little bit to pimp mobile. Sort of suited you though, just needed clouds of smoke coming out of the slightly open windows to complete the look. Look forward to seeing it soon, as will the wildlife...

POST 23 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I think the airbox mod is the highlight of the car, Jezza. You would probably get another 50bhp out of the RS2 by following suit As for the trackday, yes, it is the one on July 25th. Scaramanga would be welcome, as long as you keep the third nipple covered, Pete... would like to see what a 9M fettled 964RS goes like. Jez, you need to be a member of PCGB I think, and I'm sure they don't want a TVR Cerb on track blowing up its engine trying to keep up with the GT2s However, you can always ask: Club office is 01608 652911. They may allow the RS2 on track, as it is half pork, n'est ce pas? And if you need to be a member to book the ticket, wire the amount to my swiss bank account at badger towers and I will book for you under my membership details. Cheers Dom

POST 24Original post

I was thinking more along the lines of a Caterham driving around everyone....

POST 25 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I know, but it is more fun to take the mickey out of your Cerb. You know I like Superlight Rs

POST 26Original post

Guys - on the subject of the PCGB Silverstone day - what category of experience is everyone going in? Being a total cretin in this (and indeed, many other) regards, I told Steve Kevlin to put me in the strictly 'L' section. He seemed a little unsure and indicated I might go to the intermediate stage if I didn't go all 'el badgeroonie' on the first corner and I must admit, Brunters kind of convinced me I wasn't a total tw@t at the helm after all. Do you think the learner thing will be a bit too restrained or am I doing the right thing by wishing to progress like Cautious McCaution?

POST 28Original post

Der..I see no reason why you shouldn't go into the intermediate section. You can obviously drive the old girl. The only downside is experience of track etiquette,,your TT will hoon down the straights and on occasion hold other Porsches up during the twisties. The Porsche track days are run very well,Mr Kevlin runs quite a tight ship...I had experience of a first time track day turbo guy at Donnington. He was positively dangerous and was approaching corners at the end of the straights on a hope for the best scenario.Mr K was very quick to bring things in line. i have seen a turbo S have an accident with the armco on it's second lap of the day and drivers sent home for a very early bath after a warning. Go with the intermediate,it's easy to say try not to get too much red mist, but it is a learning experience and very different when there are other cars on the track..particularly when some will go past you. have fun...

POST 29Original post

If you haven't driven the circuit before and they run open pit lane later on, then the Novice group is a good place to start as there's then little chance of you having to watch your mirrors at the expense of learning the circuit. I'd also recommend taking instruction in your second session. If you're kept in groups all day then stick with the Intermediate group as I'm sure with your car (Turbo isn't it?) you'll reel them in on the straights and have to sit behind them thru corners in order to obey track day etiquette (no overtaking into or out of corners)

POST 30Original post

I'm not sure. Lasy year I went in the Novices group...and got overtaken a lot. By now..I'm doing the overtaking..at least some of the time. Having said that I don't have the straight line grunt so what happens is that the competent 996 drivers go by on the straights (I lift off to help them...) and the novices hold me up in the corners...might go Intermediate this year so I am circulating with drivers who are generally a bit quicker than me...at Silverstone there are plenty of overtaking straights to let 'em by on. I'm sure you will be fine. Your car is clearly a straight line monster too so the Intermediate section may be more fun as you will need to pass less. There again you may hold quicker drivers up in the corners and be needing to lift on the straights to let 'em by. This gets tiresome if it happens too often. A cautious approach is never wrong. Why not start in the Novice group...and if its clear that you are getting held up and needing to pass a great deal arrange to change session?

POST 31Original post

There IS a non-member's price listed in Porsche Post. there again...its £50 more expensive so its only £10 extra to be a member. Last year there were two TVRs (going well too...) and an Ultima (going like STINK!) at the day in the "Advanced" group. As I understand it the PCGB are being cautious about non-Porsche cars attending - so long as it isn't too many it adds fun to the day..but a Caterham R500 may be pushing it. It will be, without doubt, the fastest thing on track....

POST 32 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

If only it was an R500 eh, Jezzamundo? Don't worry Don, it's only a Superlight R, but it is still a quick enough beast to hassle the GT2s. I had a tussle with Rubystone in his SLR when I had the Baron, and can confirm that they are every bit a match for most things Porsche can put on a track. Grip and handling were better in the SLR, although acceleration into three figures started to tail off as the Baron got going. I will see if you can change groups when I book. I normally drive very cautiously to learn the circuit and warm the tyres up, before getting progressively faster. If I can change, I will start in novice as I don't know Silverstone. If not, I will risk it in intermediate - although we ought to consider having all our posse going out at the same time if not an open pit arrangement? Will chat more nearer the time no doubt.

POST 33Original post

I remember the day well....got rather noisy in the Hatfield Tunnel though didn't it ...I'd say we need to revisit that - especially now I'm fitting an aeroscreen and the car is even lighter than it was before (not to mention the rebuilt engine and later compound Avon CR500s) - should give me at least 10 mph more - still not enough to keep up with the Baron once Dom gets it above 140 though....

POST 34Original post

Thanks for that, Don. I'm reminded of what Tuff Noodles said when reviewing the 996GT3 when it first emerged, about Porsche drivers who "love to go racing." Ceratinly, when you pour over the monthly PCGB publication, one does tend to feel a tad circumspect about personal ability when you read some of the stories...there's clearly immense talent amongst the ranks and I'm sure there will be quite a few lowered 944s ready to zip through the twisties with disdain. But you can change groups if it's needed. As Domster says, learning the track is a huge part of the battle and some of us have risible combat experience! Still, it will be a mouth watering opportunity to see what these cars were designed to do (well at least a bit, anyway...)

POST 35 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

After having flogged the Red Baron (my old 964RS for the one or two who may not know) to fund a house purchase, I now have the opportunity to chop in my BMW V8 against it and scare the badgers once more... House is now bought so the cash is less of an issue. Ultima won't be finished until a good 18 months' time. And who needs four seats in a second car when the girlfriend's got a BMW compact? Besides, waiting 18 months for a proper pared-down sportscar is a bit agonising, as interesting as though the BMW was, it needed a hell of a lot of sorting out - both dynamically and mechanically - to bring it up to the levels of quality and performance I like in a runaround. So my new 'sensible car' will soon be a 964RS - and Red Baron 2 is a far superior car to the beast some of you may have seen before. Basically, Red Baron 1 looked like a minter, but was in fact a bit of a munter... its colourful history and age had started to show. A respected official Porsche bodyshop who shall remain nameless had done a pretty poor job on some damage repair, despite claiming a five figure bill from the previous owner's insurers. Some idiot had put poly bushes on one side of the front suspension, and rubber on the other. Basically, a few hidden horror stories that I was unaware of. Probably made it more of a badger magnet as well But now the Baron is something else... I had sold it to my Porsche tech who wanted it for himself, so he completely rebuilt it from the shell up. Gearbox has been rebuilt. New LSD. New suspension bushes. Everything rubber from door seals to air inlet O-rings have been replaced. Absolute 'cost and parts no object' restoration to concourse condition. And the last of the badger hairs have been removed, too My guess is about 200 hours of labour have gone into it, and with a roll cage it now looks even more awesome than previously. The final finishing of the car is still taking place, but delivery should be in the next few weeks - in time for the Silverstone pcgb trackday in July Sadly, it won't be ready for the Nurburgring. I will also invest a bit more time and money in learning to drive the thing properly, before 9M can tempt me with upping the power... Which means I can now rabbit on about the 964RS from a more credible standpoint again. Nice as those E36 BMWs are, they aren't a patch on these double (triple in 9m's case!) espresso porkers. Maybe this will change with my tech's new project - the BMW V8... he is threatening to find a new M5 engine to go in it Just thought you'd all like to know. Cheers Domster
