If I had the money for a GT2 or Modena I would pick up a low mileage 996TT and use the balance plus maybe $5-15K to pick up a 355 Spider (Deanger - I agree with you - a 355 is much better looking.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I love Porsche. But, I have heard some horror stories of the GT2 being a REAL hairy monster. One authority claims that 25% of all GT2's in the US have been in major accidents. Knowing myself and my lead foot, I could easily be one of those in the 25%.
So, if I won the lotto today and had to choose, I'd choose the moderna. If/when I get to be an expert driver, I'd get the GT2.
Wait a minute. If I won the lotto, I'd get the moderna to practice on AND the GT2 for when I really want to scare myself
.
Mike,
What is going on? Did you hit the lotto or you just dreaming. But, for me, I would go for the GT2 and be a real man(who scares himself). Then trade it back in for a TT so I wont make stains on my boxers.
Plus, I got zero time for a car that needs that much attention and need what a total engine rehaul after how many miles. Just because you can afford doesnt mean, I want to **** my money away.
I'm sorry but you must be smoking crack
why would you say that?...Being that is a Porsche forum. I think most would choose the GT...Myself included...*dropping the pipe, and looking around*
O,
I dont know but to be honest, I like the way GT2 looks over the 360. Unless it is a spider the car looks odd and enfact it looks like the new Z from nissan.
Anyways, what can I say. ME LIKEY PORSCHE
Do you want attention or performance?
I'd go for performance, GT2 hands down.
Almost twice the torque, better acceleration, braking and we all know it would out handle a Modena.
Would I be part of that 25%? Probably.
*passes pipe*

That's like asking if you had the chance to marry Mary Jane Johnson from next door who is a great cook and be a good mother (GT2) or Denise Richards, when every morning you would wake up and thank the good Lord for creating such a creature (Modena), which would you choose?
I'll take a ride on the wild side, for as long as it lasts.
360 Modena for sure....I admit, I just want to pull chics.

Damn 993RS- Ok guys if you had a choice Carrera GT or (2) 360 modenas(have to go by price on this one) LOL
!!!! There was a silver/black GT2 at a dealer lot(Sonnen) asking $185K-very slick and very low to the ground. I flipped when the dealer said if the front lower lip breaks that's $400 just to replace. Didn't test drive it because wan't going to buy it that day : ) but Danies(my dealer-great guy) started up the engine-what an intoxicating sound. I'm certainly hooked. Regards. Mike
I have only one consideration when choosing a car: which takes me from A to B faster?... Ill take a GT2 please, hold the cupholder (Im still drooling over the black GT2 I saw yesterday at the dealer)
Though I bet most of us would actually be faster on a regular 996TT than on a GT2
, so Id rather have a 996TT with ceramics, powerkit and a sportier suspension setup.

I think we are going to see a '99 996 C2 Coupe Guards Red/Black go on sale pretty soon
. Go for it, Mike!! Just make sure life insurance is paid up
Well Palting- I don't think I could ever give up my 996- it's gone thru quite a few battles on the track and it's been rewarding everytime. I look at my car(I'm getting psychotic here) as a living thing and I nurtured it like my own. My car gets moody when it's stuck in the garage-won't start up and if it does, it sputters because it's pissed off at me for not driving everyday. I love it for what it does for me. If I can get a GT2- I still keep my baby-it's that great of a car to me. Regards. Back to the loony bin now. Mike
Here are the comments from someone who owns both:
"I really love both Porsche and Ferrari, and I've previously owned a 993 C4S and a GT3 before the GT2, so I should be pretty unbiased in my assessments. Let me shock you right away: between the GT2 and Modena it is the Modena which feels racebred.
It is probably down to a mix of a more racy engine sound, more sharp steering and most of all a quickness of the front end to follow instructions and dive for the apex. The 360 feels more agile where the GT2 feels more grippy and planted, even though when the GT2 slides it does so with great controllability and composure for the rwd almost 500hp beast."
He goes on to say the GT2 is much quicker but the 360 is very quick because taking the engine to 9000rpms makes up for some tenths it might loose in outright acceleration.

I truly love my 996TT but I would still take a 360 Modena over it or the GT2. It has a certain excitement and rawness that I love when driving it. That being said, all things considered the 996TT is a much more reliable, easily maintained daily driver and that is why I have it.
Ignacio,
Why do you say a 996TT is a better car than a 996GT2 or Modena? I think that statement is a personal preference of the all wheel drive. For the street only, the TT is far superior. I love all three. I would rather a C2, hence my favoring the GT2. My opinion, which is what we are all adding, is the GT2 is the perfect track car. I think the 360 is the perfect garage car.
Street: 996TT
Track: 996GT2
Garage: 360 Modena
Well, unfortunately none of these cars is the perfect track car, seeing as they all exceed 3,000 lbs (and the TT is over 3,500 lbs is ridiculous for the track).
Wish the new GT3 would get a good diet as it looks to weigh over 3k lbs too...
I'd take 360 Modena over GT2. Although if you compare Carrera GT vs. Modena then I'd take Carrera GT. Heck, if you can afford 360 Modena, why not get a GT2 as well or vice-versa. You gotta fill up the garage somehow.

FWIW, the 996 GT3 was always heavier than the 2WD Carrera by a wee bit.
2000 ROW 996 GT3: 1350 kg / 2976 lb
2000 ROW 996 Carrera: 1320 kg / 2910 lb
Porsche chose to keep some of the creature comforts in this one in contrast to the deletions of the previous RS versions.
Hi Mike, how's it going? Have fun at Thunderhill. I hope to be back down there this spring.
As far as a choice between a GT2 and Modena, if someone was giving me one of the cars, I'd go for the GT2. It's just too wickedly fast, for me too choose the Modena, even though I love the looks of the 360.
If I were spending my own money, for $200,000 I'd buy a 'standard' 996 TT and one of the new Viper SRT-10 convertables.
Jim
I think there are a lot of crack smokers here. The GT2 obliterates the 360. I mean, it is not even close. Yes., I've driven them both and I went for the GT2. Drive them both for an hour on the street or the track and then try to argue the other way...
Moreover, with the exception of the heavy clutch, the statements that the GT2 is not street friendly are VASTLY overstated.
The GT2 is best compared to the F40, not the Modena. And BTW, the GT2 gets just as much attention as a 360. Besides, if its attention you want, buy a Lambo, or hell a reproduction that just looks like a Lambo. Then you can lean on it and look cool. Meanwhile GT2's will just set lap records at the Ring...
In all honesty, comparing the GT2 to the 360 is not fair. The GT2 is faster, tougher, more fun to drive, fully driver adjustable, far far far more rare, and you can beat the sh#t out of it all day and come back for more. I also think it looks about a million times better. Now, the 355 is another matter...
And as for the Denise Richards argument... Have you seen the two cars side by side?
And as for all this rot about various 996TT's and how they're better than a GT2... please. A better daily driver? I know which one I'd rather drive every day. Get a Merc, or an M5, or a Lexus if you really want to win the daily driver arguement.
The GT2 is an awesome, awesome machine. It is a turbo charged GT3 and then some. And twenty years from now when you line up the more than 5000 360's that will have been produced and put them next to the less than 200 GT2s I wonder which ones will be considered classics...
Ditto to Deanger's comments and looking forward to seeing you again at Thunderhill Jim-how's everything going and all? I'm going again Sept20/22(Thunderhill) and another one in Dec(Laguna Seca) so I'm wating til my 996 blows and engine so I can get a GT2
. I was at the dealership today getting Pagid pads plus SS lines and bleeding them with ATE Super Blue and salivating over the GT2(silver/black) in the showroom. I think if it was Speed yellow/black interior it would have been very difficult not to sign the dotted line. The GT2 is a freaking animal IMO. Regards. Mike
Im with Deanger in everything he said except for the fact that I think that the 966TT is better for the streets not because it may be a bit more confortable (who cares about that), but because in the streets you can probably go faster with the 996TT than the GT2 unless your Walter Rohrl. Now, in the track, the GT2 is at the very top of the food chain.
Tough tough decision. It would be nice to be able to make that decision. Here is one for you to Ponder>
There is one guy that Clubraces a 1997 993 Supercup car that also has a 360 Spider, silver GT2, and a tangerine orange Lamborghini Murcelago. Brought 3 of the 4 cars to Lime Rock.
Nice guy and awesome small part of his collection.
For me I would like another convertible......so make mine a 360 Modena Spider 6spd RED , tan leather/black contrasting leather with red sticking, carbon seats, RED convertible top.
The GT2 for the track car in B stock would be pure "Carpet-bombing" for everyone in B.

If I was to buy a 360 Modena I'd choose the 6 speed spider but even then I won't because the GT-2 is my ultimate machine. I thought my targa looked good until I parked it next to a maritime blue GT-2, i thought I stepped off an SUV
Not alot of cars can make the targa look like the younger geeky sister with braces and zits

Its a FERRARI, one of the world's greatest cars and marqees. I'm sure the GT2 is nice and all, but a Ferrari it is not.

I agree a FERRARI is very nice... to look at. And a 360 SPYDER is an awesome machine..to look at. And even to drive fast once and a while so long as you don't want to go fast for more than about 25 minutes. I truly wish I had one to go with the GT2. When it comes to a convertible, Ferraris are the sexiest. However, as much as I might get a kick out of cruising around town and stopping to pose on my car, I'm more the stealth bomber type. So when something comes blasting by you one day in your 360 and disappears before you know what hit you... take a second look... it might have been a GT2
BTW - Am I the only one who actually thinks a 355 looks better than a 360?. Both are nice, but the 355 is bellisima.
Deanger, I agree with you that the 355 is much more beautiful to look at then the 360. The 360 is the better performing car though and having driven F1 versions of both I think that 360 is miles ahead in terms of stability and performance. Still take a GT-2 over both though no matter how sexy the Ferrari is
If I had the money for a GT2 or Modena I would pick up a low mileage 996TT and use the balance plus maybe $5-15K to pick up a 355 Spider (Deanger - I agree with you - a 355 is much better looking. Looks more like a "Ferrari", while the 360 is also gorgeous but looks like a matchbox fantasy car).
If I want something for the track I would buy a Ducati 998 or a Yamaha R6...there's just somethinng about a bike vs. a car on the track...maybe the feeling of dragging your knee on the asphalt at 100 mph
My $0.02
Just saw an interesting video where the 996 twin turbo (admittedly not GT2) was compared directly against the 360 Modena. The drivers utilised in the testing were professional race car drivers.
The unanimous decision was that the 996 Twin was superior to the 360 Modena in all tests (acceleration, slalom, skid pan/G force, braking and even head to head on the track).
But what was far more interesting was the fact that they decided to throw in a current generation Nissan Skyline GTR Nismo R spec, and that darn car beat the 996 twin turbo on the twisties and on the straight!!!!
So, if I am looking for a track car (forgetting about emotions, sex appeal, stud value etc)...I think I would place my money with Nissan...and I can still easily fit two adults in the back!
Cheers

Being a Porsche fan, I think a GT2 is nice but I couldn't stand the fact that Porsche made so much money on me. I'd feel like I took a sucker punch from the marketing department.
I would take the Modena with a few Ferrari Challenge car parts installed.
Harold- I saw a video as well with a 360 modena/996 tt and Skyline GTR(not sure whether it's nismo or not) but Skyline was whipped on the 1/4 mile by the 360 and then the 996tt beat the 360. The 360 was ahead of the Skyline by 4 car lengths and 996 tt beat out 360 by one car length. Also from this japanese video- 996 tt had best braking distance and slalom speed. Wanted to buy the video myself but was a demo on an import car show. In terms of who's smoking crack and all- how long before every single time on the track the GT2 will win and win and win and you still think 360 is your choice. I'm looking at sheer performance between the two. This isn't a beauty contest and the GT2 isn't no slouch either in that venue. regards. Mike
I couldn't stand the fact that Porsche made so much money on me. I'd feel like I took a sucker punch from the marketing department.
whaddya think Ferrari Makes on a car?
I dunno how much Ferrari makes on a car. But I do know from the Feb.4, 2002,
Forbes Magazine
article "Porsche Goes Soccer Mom", that Porsche AG makes an average 45% profit margin on a standard Turbo. This was the highest margin in the Porsche line and perhaps the highest per unit margin in the industry. I feel the GT2 with it's simplification has got to cost less to produce than a standard Turbo so the profit must be even more, maybe 100%.
I think a company should make what it can, I'm just dissappointed the performance customer must step up to the plate and pay what I consider usury to own a GT2 and personally would not buy one for that reason alone.
We buy Porsche for a multitude of reasons. Certainly, the marque and all that it means is one of them. We therefore have to pay for that as well. Call it snob appeal if you will, but that is one of the things that distinguishes Porsche fom other cars. Much the same as what distinguishes Ferrari, Mecedes, BMW.
If we would base the cost of purchasing the car on the cost of production, we would be buying cars like the Nissan 350Z. A great car, BTW.
996FLAT6 maybe this is a new kit car that uses the boxster lol all kidding aside though, bocky this is a beautiful spider. After market wheels? cuz they look like a multi-peice design. one other quistion, F-1 or 6 speed ?
355 is better looking than a 360, GT2 still beats them all. The only Ferarri I would but for track purposes is an F40 and the street car would be a 550 Maranello or Testarossa. GT2 still beats them all. Of course, just my opinion.
Interesting, all the opinions regarding these two cars, since both are quite rare, most of the people who order and sometimes wait years for them to come in have never even driven the car till they leave the dealership in theirs.
I own a very modified 996tt (mid 500 horsepower), and have about a year and a half to go before my black 360 spider will show. I have driven both a 360 spider and a coupe, and have had the chance to also drive the GT2. I consider myself very lucky to had had the chance to drive those cars and I wonder how many of those making comments here have. I love Porsches, the two I own now are the 28th and 29th I have owned, but I have to say I have never felt anything like the way a 360 handles and feeds back the driver, and strange as it way be, check every major car publication, they seem to agree. Just my two cents
I simply love the fact the GT2 is a track made car and that's my criteria in my choosing over the 360. I do quite a few DE's and just love the fact GT2 is the ultimate well at least from what magazines do say. Have you driven the GT2 on the track to make a better assessment or just on the streets and all? The dealership had a silver/black one but yellow/black is my flavor for the GT2(would have been difficult not to sign the dotted line for a yellow one
