Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I think it's SMARTop who do the retrofit kit and I've seen one fitted and it worked exactly the same as standard one on my old 04 996 Cab.....

Hi can anyone tell me if the late 2000 996 Cabriolet roof should open at speeds under 30 mph, as opposed to doing it when the car has the handbrake on and stationary? The 2005-current models can open on the move, and some reviews of 996 say it is part of the spec, but I would be interested to know if mine should actually do this? I have also read of kits that can be added to the early 996 to allow the roof to open whilst driving slowly, no impact on battery or functionality. Again, any intel on these types of systems would be appreciated. Many thanks, H

I think this was only standard from facelift on so yours probably would not have this feature fitted as standard. I think it's SMARTop who do the retrofit kit and I've seen one fitted and it worked exactly the same as standard one on my old 04 996 Cab.....

OK, I bought a smarttop from WrightTune yesterday (£265 plus VAT, £311). Mine is a later 996 which normally opens at up to 30mph. I bought it for three reasons: The one touch operation, because it is an inconvenience to hold your finger on the switch for 20 seconds; the fact that you can put up the rear windows with the rof down, because I think it looks smarter; and the fact that the remote operation puts the roof up AND winds the windows up, because without that feature it is pretty pointless putting the roof up remotely. Advice I received from my local independent before buying it was: Be careful putting your roof up at speed anyway. The earlier ones have quite a weak roof system, and driving in wind at 30 mph is like flying a big kite and the roof can get easily damaged. The side windows are quite weak when in the up position, so be careful. This is why Porsche disable this feature. So long as you are sensible then it is OK. I am delighted with mine now.

Hi.. I have a 2003 facelift cab and yes it does open on the move

POST 5Original post

But the 2000 doesn't, as the roof is not as well supported.

POST 6Original post

they revised the roof frame when they put the little glass window in and I think made it more robust. On pre facelift cars you have to have the hand brake on , but on the upside the remote opens and closes the roof and windows. Smart top from Wrightune does everything.

Cabrio operation when driving Hey guys! Thanks for all your replies - excellent! I have seen this kit and am interested to know that it actually does work. My roof fucntion does indeed close and open the windows after completing the roof operation but does not work unless the handbrake is on. I think this may have to be an investment... what kind of labour charges do you think? Were any of you there last night? I was hoping for a blast but the guys were all knackered from a whole week of track days etc. I am assured by Tony (route master 'clinchy') that next month we will drive out - anyone up for this? Thanks again, H
