Bought a base
987.2
about a year ago and I had
numeric
short shifter kit installed but left the cables because one of the previous owners had the cables already replaced at 38k miles and from the parts listed it looked like the new revised ones were installed:
$900 for labor / $788 for parts - Shifter Cable Set, Left Cable Support, Linkage Coupling, M8 Lock Nut
The car has 49k miles now and I noticed 3 times this past week where I put it into first gear and it would rev as if it was still in neutral. I quickly shifted into neutral and back into first and it was fine, but is this a sign that the cable could be failing? Or just instances where I didn't have the lever fully engaged?
There is generally no advanced sign that the cable is about to break. So it might be the shifter needs adjustment. I'm not familiar with setting-up the Numeric shifter, but the OEM one has a centering tool.
The cables are pretty simple. Suggest the following:
1. Get under the passenger rear wheel and see where the cables are connected to the transmission. Make sure that looks snug and there isn't a lot of play (they may be some).
2. Open up the center console (bit tedious but easy) and as
@RSchwerer
suggested use a centering tool and make sure the cables are snug and tight with the catch of the shifter. Check with Numeric on how they set up their shifter as suggested.
Thanks, I had a shop install the
Numeric
SSK and will ask them to check and see if there's any adjustments necessary.
The cables are the updated OEM ones with the left support piece.
Would it be safe to drive in the meantime?
Really hard to gauge safety via an online forum to be honest. Definitely get it checked out sooner than later.
As I was driving my MT
Cayman
this morning I thought of this thread. Man, it is hard to mistakenly get into N while going into 1st. I used to accidently go into R instead, but N is nowhere near 1st. Must be a shifter or cable issue. Kind of the same thing since you adjust the cable ends to adjust the shifter.
Update - Had a shop check out the cables and all the linkages and they didn't find anything wrong with it and couldn't recreate it. It occurred to me that I should have my transmission oil and brake fluid changed so I had them do that as well. Checking service records, the transmission oil was never changed and the recommended service interval is every 120k or 10 years. The shifting feels MUCH smoother now and it's such a joy to shift with the
Numeric
short shifter. Getting going in first gear feels much easier, no more clunk noise that occurred previously going in to gear, the inconsistent but regular notchiness going into 3rd is also just about gone. Car overall just seems to be smoother. Get your transmission oil changed if you haven't!
