This is not a probability of success.

Could be so many things it would be nigh on impossible to diagnose by description, it will require a test drive.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I need some opinons on a bit of self diagnosis prior to visiting my indie. Since fitting my new clutch (maybe red herring or coincidence) I have had a low pitch whine on falling engine revs. The whine is not audible at tickover but is most perceptiible between 2-3k rpm with no throttle as the revs die. Above 3k rpm the PSE is so loud that I do not hear the whine. The whine seems to be there with clutch in or out but trying to pinpoint today with the engine cover open the whine is hardly audible in the engiine bay but is audible in the cabin again low dull whine - like a moan most audible on a trailing throttle. On very close engine bay inspection the alternator seems to be slightly rattley/tinkly but the belt seems fairly quiet. I do not think this is drive train related as it is there in neutral and not moving but is fairly loud and noticeable on the move at low throttle/ engine rpm. I will get my indie to diagnose this week but thought it may be helpful to get opinion/experience and to create a thread for the search history. Cheers

POST 2Original post

You need someone with experience of using chassis ears (a special listening tool). The altenators are noisey on tick over anyway so I doubt that is your issue. Could be so many things it would be nigh on impossible to diagnose by description, it will require a test drive. What is your location? Someone close by may lend an experienced ear.
