Over time they wear and struggle to maintain pressure, meaning they need more oil pressure to work, hence the ticking at low rpm but not once a bit of pressure is running through the engine.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hi all, Just replaced the sump pan on my '98 996 C2 Tip', as the old one had been damaged / repaired, and had subsequently started to weep oil. When I got the old one off, there were a few 'shavings' of metal sitting in the dregs of oil [/img] They're like very fine shavings, probably only 1 or 2 thousandths of an inch thick, and very shiny on one side, and a kind of cast steel colour on the other. Car is running fine, has done 80K, but does have the 'tappy' engine noise (cam follower wear?) between tickover and 1100rpm. Anyone have any idea what these bits could be, or what they might have worn off? I've heard of magnetising the sump plug to catch bit's like this - anyone think it's worth it, and if so, is the plug aluminium like the sump, or steel? Thanks!

POST 2Original post

Haven't a clue what they are off but it doesn't look good. Normal to get some 'swarf' (iron filings) attached to the sump plug - given that its magnetised which I thought they all were?

POST 3Original post

I'll move this to the 996 forum.... Isn't the tapping usually cylinder/bore going oval? I would contact Hartech and describe the symptoms - he could teach Porsche all about the 996 engine :thumb:

POST 4Original post

... if only they'd listen! Doesn't sound too good. I would refrain from driving until you have had this diagnosed.

POST 5Original post

Is oil pressure Ok? Possible big end shell bearing damage?

POST 6 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Yes, oil pressure's fine - up near the top of the guage when pushing on

POST 7Original post

The ticking upto 1100 is most likely one or more valve assemblies, they're hydraulic and need oil pressure to function. Over time they wear and struggle to maintain pressure, meaning they need more oil pressure to work, hence the ticking at low rpm but not once a bit of pressure is running through the engine. With 80k on the clock I'd say it was pretty much normal. Assuming it's not remnants of the damage to your sump, may be bits of the Intermediate shaft bearing. Are there bits of plastic too? Take a look at this thread http://911uk.com/viewtopic.php?t=55510&highlight=ims Regardless, if the cars still running ok then you've caught it in time...talk to Hartech

POST 8 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

There were two small pieces of brown coloured plastic there - this point to IMS? Help!! Has anyone got a Saturday job going

POST 9Original post

You have my sympathy... You have to talk to Hartech, not about the Saturday job but they will hopefully identify the evil infidels and know the best course of action. Good luck, let us know how you get on :?

POST 10Original post

The plastic swarf is even more of an IMS tell tale. Shiny metal can come from anywhere (although the IMS bearings are particularly shiny due to the chromium strengthening). See here: http://www.911uk.com/viewtopic.php?t=54280

POST 11Original post

ims ?? Just read that Autofarm are now offering a retro IMS upgraded bearing that can be fiited in situe. Best to check it before it goes and wrecks the motor.

POST 12Original post

Ref: in situ IMS solution, see here: http://911uk.com/viewtopic.php?t=55510 http://www.autofarm.co.uk/engines/water_cooled/shaft_tech2 http://www.lnengineering.com/ims.html#retrofit Hartech offer a similar option (for less): http://www.hartech.org/

POST 13 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thanks very much for all your replies averyone, always great info' shared on here. Do any of you know how much I'd be looking at to get the IMS done at Hartech, as this is nearer to where I'm at up here in Cumbria? Cheers.

POST 14Original post

The info is in that first link I posted above, let me quote/paraphrase Baz: Not too bad given you get an oil service too. I think I will be heading north when my clutch goes.

POST 15 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thanks again GT4, £1300 for my Tip then... Would take the total so far to £2600 since March - when will it just work OK?!?!?! :floor:
