DIY maintenance on it isn’t too bad assuming you have a basic knowledge of how to do oil changes, air filter changes, change flats, etc.

Hello, Planet 9! This weekend I went to go look at a 2008 cayman base with 69k miles. The CarFax is long with documented maintenance, the exterior and interior seem to be very well maintained, and the car drives and idles great. I went on two test drives, one with a salesman and one without. The time I went without I noticed a pulsing sound coming from the engine compartment that was louder and distinctively different than the exhaust. It would happen in 5th gear around 2000rpm and 55ish mph with my foot barely on the gas. If I took my foot off or gave it more gas it would lessen but still be noticeable. Unfortunately I didn’t have an opportunity to take it on a highway to test cruising speeds past 60mph. At lower speeds it was nonexistent One small thing I thought of after I left was that the car was already at operating temperatures when I arrived (I called ahead about the car) This being my first Porsche I’m not really sure what I’m hearing Tomorrow I’m going to push for a PPI and mention the sound and see what they say. i hope this is the right car for me but I’m not afraid to pass it up! Thanks in advance for any insight or advice! -Shamus P.

If you’re not comfortable with how it drives, I would get a third party PPI/Buyers check for peace of mind. My 07 Cayman gets distinctively louder in the higher RPM’s and rumbles with the stock exhaust. DIY maintenance on it isn’t too bad assuming you have a basic knowledge of how to do oil changes, air filter changes, change flats, etc. Mine has also been very reliable and never left me stranded anywhere. The tires are kind of expensive and parts in general but overall it’s been a great experience for me. I personally think it’s a very balanced vehicle in terms of weight distribution and handles well.
