Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Suggestion
If you are only motorway light throttle cruising or round town driving there is absolutely no point even using any more than 95 octane!

Local OPC asked what fuel I had been using - I said 'Tesco 99'.

Suggestion
Personally always use Shell but tesco's 99 sounds good too
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

About to take the car through France and Spain. Does anybody know if 99 Octane is readily available in these countries? Also is it wise to avoid supermarket petrol abroad as in the UK? Thoughts gratefully appreciated. :?:
yep...loads of the stuff right across france, spain, italy should have no prob
of course that way six months ago, could have changed as these things tend to
99 Ron is available across Europe
In the UK BP Ultimate is available as 97 RON

and it used to be available in 102RON, but that has been withdrawn now

Tesco Momentum 99 is, as it sounds 99RON and Shell V Power is also 99RON

I always brim the tank on the way to the 'ring at the Shell station on the A4 autobahn in Germany with 100 octane Racing V-Power
Lovely stuff but it was 1.64 euros a litre last time
99 Octane fuel in Europe
Many thanks all the replies - mind at rest. I only questiond the supermarket aspect as I reently had a fuel pump failure (primed but not pumping sufficient pressure to fire up the cylinders). Local OPC asked what fuel I had been using - I said 'Tesco 99'. 'Funny' they said 'yours is about the sixth we have had this year with fuel pump failures all using Tesco 99'. So I now use Shell - yes more expensive but so is a replacement fuel pump every few years. :?
I've just recently returned from a 2 week trip through France, Switzerland and Spain. - I set out with the intention of using Shell most of the time as that is what I use in the UK. However, ended up using varying makes of super plus in each country. To be honest I didn't notice any difference either in peformance or economy. I did 2700 miles and averaged 31 mpg which I thought was very good.
Please take note though - the petrol on the motorways/toll roads is considerably more expensive than towns / supermarkets - Expect to pay roughly same as over here for super plus 97/98Ron. It was cheaper in Spain though.. Be careful in France as quite a few of the petrol stations are un-attended and only take French debit cards.. Nearly caught me out once or twice when I had the warning light on!!
Watch out for the Gendarme on French motorways . They are spoiling the fun with those damn radar guns.... saw quite a few on some of the motorways., and dont be tempted to put in a radar detector or they'll have your Porsche sat in a compound whilst your paying out a hefy fine.
You will enjoy your trip though - we had a great time driving through France to Geneva then down to Montpellier and finally over to Barcelona. Great roads, great scenery.. Have fun !!
I wanna go again now I'm thinking about it!!
Well
on a recent two week holidy in the West of France I didnt, and couldn't find any 99 fuel, of any brand, make or description.
Best was 98, only saw one Shell Station, and their version of V-Power was only 98 as well,
Ended up with 98 from Carrefour, with no noticeable difference,
I did, however, run it down on the way home and top up with Shell 99 at the first services outside of Plymouth !
If you are only motorway light throttle cruising or round town driving there is absolutely no point even using any more than 95 octane! The engine won't be knocking under those conditions so the performance will be no different. And even for the occasional spurt to full throttle, the knock control will keep the engine safe should any knocking occur. Most people do not drive in a fashion to actually notice the difference a few degrees of spark retard will make.
