Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1Original post

Please forgive me if this is a stupid question and I'll close this thread. I have my new shifter+cables installed and it seems to shift fine for all gears. I was just morbidly nervous on if there's such thing as partial gear engagement that could wreck havoc on my transmission? My understanding is that if it is barely engaged when I move the shift lever (due to cable length adjustment), then I should expect the shifter to kick/pop out of the gear. Obviously if it engages then it works like you expect a manual transmission car. Is there a third region of engagement that is between pop-out and gear engagement? Where maybe the gear is engaged but not fully and it's damaging my transmission? Or is that not possible and if it engages and doesn't pop out it is good to go?

POST 2Original post

As long as the shifter throw (fore-and-aft) doesn't prevent the gear from fully engaging, you have nothing to worry about. You can test this with the engine off, so there's no risk of damage if it's misadjusted. Simply row through the shift pattern, and feel/listen for the gears to engage. POST 3Original post

You made a lightbulb go off in my head. Here's what I did. I put the shifter into a gear. It has very minimal but some play to it. I can wiggle the play a bit to push it back (or forth a tad) against the detent that holds it in gear. Since I can feel the detent I assume that I am completely engaged in gear. I would imagine partial engagement where the gear pops out, you wouldn't feel the shifter move a bit and hit up against the detent. Thanks!
