Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Suspected cause
Brake fluid flush is probably a few hundred dollars.
Leading evidence: 'few hundred dollars' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, the most frequently mentioned possible cause is 'few hundred dollars' (1 discussions; 0 report identifying it and 1 suggest it). The most frequently discussed action is 'Check metal in the oil' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

If you can, send off an oil analysis to Blackstone labs to check for metal in the oil.

As said, do the PPI to double check rust, suspension etc.

Suggestion
If you don't have a brake light, no reason to change brakes unless you just want new brakes.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

considering buying a
2008 boxster
and there are no service records, I am wondering what the costs are at the dealer to have the following work done
1. front and rear brakes the car has 50000 miles and original brakes
2.spark plugs changed
3. brake fluid flushed
4. water pump and thermostate done when it needs it
anything else I should do right away. jimbo
Dealer will probably charge 5-6k to get that done. I’d check with an Indy first. But also, maybe consider a different
Cayman
that has records and has some of those items addressed.

Anyone can do these brakes - Zimmerman rotors are OEM and cheaper than
Porsche
-branded. You can probably get brakes done for under $1k including parts. If you don't have a brake light, no reason to change brakes unless you just want new brakes. Brake fluid flush is probably a few hundred dollars.
Same with spark plugs - easy peasy to replace. If you aren't getting CEL codes for misfires, no reason to replace them.
If it were me, I'd have a PPI completed at a competent Indie shop. Things like hoses, belts, suspension parts are where I would check. If you can, send off an oil analysis to Blackstone labs to check for metal in the oil.
You should get a PPI done before purchase, then assuming all looks good you need to do all the things on the Major Maintenance Schedule (40k miles / 4 years). I paid $2200 at an indy 5 years ago to do the checkup and brake work shortly after purchase of my 07
Cayman
with 40k miles. Didn't replace the plugs at that time (have since), but you definitely want to replace them even if no misfires because they have a tendency to weld themselves to the heads if left in too long.
If you are not a DIY-er, find you a good independent mechanic to do the work. If you are a DIY-er, these cars are surprisingly easy to work on. At a minimum, you should get a PPI from people who know what goes wrong with these cars. There are some really bad things that can be hiding under the surface, and you don't want to inherit someone else's problem.
Since this car is not under warranty, no sense getting robbed by the
Porsche
stealership. If you don't know who to go to, find the web site for your local
Porsche
Club of America chapter and see who advertises with them.
Any
Porsche
dealer will typically cost approximately 50% more than an excellent quality, independent
Porsche
shop. Most will be more than happy to do a Pre Purchase Inspection (PPI) for a few hundred dollars. Then you can decide whether it makes sense to buy or not. They can also answer your price questions.
I just had the 4 year service done in Nov @ dealer $2200 less 20% PCA discount parts & labor (special for out region & dealer) $1800
It included all filters - air, 2 cabins, plugs, oil, brake fluid, plus adjustment/checks. You would only do brakes & water pump if PPI recommended it.
Brakes are an easy change if you are mechanical. Just unbolt and plug in new parts if the calipers don't need repairs. If calipers need service I would go to an Indy shop for that.
I don't think it makes sense to take a 10 year old car to the dealer. I'd suggest not buying the car unless you have a highly-skilled independent already in the loop. Around here (silicon valley) the dealers are more like 2x that of independent Porsche specialists.
That said, for the things you want done, you could shop around for non-Porsche places. None of that is specialized.
Agree
I haven't found anyone around Citrus County Florida yet.
Tampa and Sarasota have them but don't to drive 1.5-2.5 hours unless major saving.
Ocala dealer is 30 minutes and gives PCA 20% off parts and labor so somewhat OK.
its a 12 year old car.... that comes with related maintenance requirements.
as the others have mentioned do a full pre-purchase inspection (PPI) to see what the future may hold in store. You may also need to keep a budget for incidental repairs/fixes.
Headliner, A/C servicing, tyres, suspension, front/rear arms, gearbox/transmission fluids need to be checked out.
But the car will reward you with driving pleasure if well taken care.....
50,000 miles isn’t too worn down. As said, do the PPI to double check rust, suspension etc.
The brakes are incredibly easy as has been mentioned if you’re handy at all.
Brake fluid flush is also easy and you can by a bleeder tank on
Amazon
for like $40 which works wonders and saves you lots of money in the long run.
No service records can be a little worrying but sometimes it’s just the nature of a used car. If the PPI checks out I wouldn’t be afraid but keeping in mind there is some maintenance expense - either your diy time or a dealer/Indy shop, but you already know that.
If you’re mechanical, most of this can be done DIY and about $500 in parts.
