Its the electric's you have to be careful of.I used a latex glove to stop the stuff going into the air intake box, used cling film on the exposed electrical connections and a long handled decorating brush to get at the niggly bits.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Im feeling brave enough to clean the engine bay of my car with Autoglym machine & engine cleaner. From what the instructions tell me I should use a paintbrush and not to let it dry. So am assuming that I shouldnt let the engine warm up then apply? any advice appreciated :?
Can somebody give me some advice please? or let me know of a better place to ask the question as i am new to this forum thanks.
I did,nt want to risk it with mine as you only see 10% of the engine through the boot so your not really cleaning it.I settled for a soapy sponge with pretty good results.I guess its your call. 8) .
I share your fear!

Its the electric's you have to be careful of.I used a latex glove to stop the stuff going into the air intake box, used cling film on the exposed electrical connections and a long handled decorating brush to get at the niggly bits. Gave it a good spray gentle clean with the brush. Whether this is the right thing to do or not I then removed all the film etc and started her up and hosed off the grime with her running. Paranoid about water in the electric's etc.
Seemed to work OK.
Hope that helps

If were doing this I would probably use a paintbrush and WD-40 to agitate any dirt/dust and disolve any grease stains and wipe away with a soft rag.
That way it is water proofed and "back to blacked".
You need to make sure the excess WD-40 is wiped up and fully evaporated before you go for a drive, else the road dust will stick again.
Cheers for the advice! But I had already asked a mate who helped me with the engine detail. We used Autoglym Machine & Engine Cleaner and a long handled brush. He brushed the cleaner around the engine then pressure washed it off and here is the result it looks and smells factory fresh!

Me thinks I better spend some more time on mine! yours looks fantastic! What did you use to shine up the hoses?
I have the autoglym rubber seal stuff?
Martin
sure to be careful with the hose / pressure washer
but its not as if the engine bay is always a dry place anyway - wet roads, rain etc.
its built to take it(!) - a bit
I use some stuff that's designed for cleaning bikes P1
http://www.p1sseezee.com/
just because I happened to have some around and thought it might do the job it did
and its also good for wheel arches and tyres - but not strong enough for brake dust / alloys
Good to see I've given some of you the confidence to DIY!
Instructions:
1. Apply Autoglym Machine & Engine Cleaner on a cool engine and dont leave it running while you do it, I drove roughly 1 mile to get it cleaned.
2. With long handled brush gently move around the engine.
3. Pressure wash it off in short bursts and not in one go.
4. Apply Autpglym Vinyl & Rubber Care and let it set, do not wipe off just spray and let it settle.
5. Show off your new looking engine to everyone!
