Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

1 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1Original post

I changed the oil in my 2.7L engine today. It was basically an "engine flush"--the old oil had only about 2500kms on it. But, since I knew that the previous owner had been rather stingy with oil changes (every two years/8000 kms; no record of the last 3-4 years), I'm assumed it wouldn't hurt to do an early oil change. I struggled to cut open the Napa Gold 1042 oil filter, but eventually did get it apart. There were no metal bits in the metal canister or the paper folds, which is good. However, and to my question: I did notice that on the side of the canister where the FilterMag was attached, there was a some fine black residue, somewhat similar to graphite (though wet with oil, of course). Is it normal to see such metallic residue inside the filter? TIA ...
