Suggestion

The extra slop ended up being the result of the dealer failing to reinstall one of the rubber pieces in the linkage when they removed my transmission 6 years ago to replace the RMS.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

It took almost 6 years for me to revisit this issue, but I solved the problem thanks to the following thread.

POST 1Original post

I recently picked up my 2006 Cayman S w/ 6-speed manual from the dealer after getting the RMS/IMS seals replaced (transmission removed and reinstalled to do this). The shifter now has about 1" of play fore/aft that was not there before. There is also the usual slight play side to side, but that has not changed from before. I took a look at the cable connections to the transmission and everything looks good. Cable end bushings look healthy, and the cable supports are properly seated in the brackets and zip-tied. I can also see that the play is not in the cables, as moving the shifter fore/aft moves the lever and small flywheel on the transmission (driver's side). See attached videos below. The cable on the passenger side has no play at the transmission. It does not look like there is any adjustment at the transmission. Would realigning the shifter using the special alignment tool help fix this problem? It feels like there is not enough tension holding the shifter in position. The 1" play is the same in neutral or in gear. I will also check in with the dealer this week and see what they say.

POST 2Original post

the amount of "play" at the shift knob (in the car) appears to be the same as at the transmission end. That leads me to believe whatever is wrong is at the transmission end. I'm not sure if there is any way to adjust how that mechanism at the transmission end behaves???

POST 3Original post

The only adjustment I'm aware of is at the shifter end. It is done with a plastic "tool" that holds the lever in the correct position while the cables are adjusted. Your dealer should have this tool.
