POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hi all, I am looking at changing my exhaust on a 987.1,2.7l Cayman. Not so much for ‘performance’, but a better sound , more ‘Growl’. I read a bit from ‘Fabspeed’ and others , but are there any local options ? And what are the options ? Can you work with the existing?Appreciate any tips, input, opinions . Cheers.

POST 2Original post

Arnie the Carnewal modification is excellent. I did this on my 987 Cayman. The sound is very exotic and zero drone at any rpm. There is a place in sydney who also mods the stock mufflers, but they do not do it anything at all as well as Carnewal (but they are cheap). Reach out to Gert through the website. Very helpful. http://www.carnewal.com/products/987/p87007/987-1-Carnewal-GT-Exhaust

POST 6Original post

I have a set of Cayman S (987.1) stock mufflers I would sell, if you want to try cutting a set open yourself. I believe Gert removes the cat converters in the muffler (but you still have a set in your headers) and mods the porting a little in the muffler. I would do it myself, but my welding leaves MUCH to be desired. You can look up Mako exhausts in sydney. He mods them too, but only for sound.

POST 7 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Quotes source post: 316694

I am thinking on your lines , want to keep my stock exhaust , ( in pristine condition ) , that way I am able to convert back , if that ever becomes necessary. And yes, I can see how the 'refund' sending my exhaust back to them will be seriously eaten into by shipping cost. You'll be better of to sell locally. I just want to bolt off/on and be done with. For $200 bucks or so , I can't see myself rolling around in the dirt , breaking things , bloodied knuckles , lots of swearing.... 🤬 , rather go to Dandenong exhaust , wait with a cuppa and enjoy the new sound on the way back home.

+1 on Carnewal GT, it's nucking futs (and also not obnoxious). You can try Mako Tune in Sydney, as suggested. Probably not the same as Gert's but more like the PSE.

POST 10Original post

mako doesn't (will not) remove the cats. I asked them to do it last year but because they would not do it, I didn't go ahead. Here is a pic from rennlist showing the internals of your stock muffler. Gert didn't elaborate on exactly what he does understandably!

POST 15Original post

Mike. Are you able to share the cost side with gert? Specifically the postage cost to send your core to Belgium and the postage cost to get the exhaust back to Australia. the actual carnewal seems cheap enough, I just fear paying $600+ in postage.

POST 16Original post

Quotes source post: 316806

It was a good 5 or 6 years ago I did mine, and I think the exchange rate was much more favorable too. I did not send mine back but bought a set that he had in stock. I still have my original Cayman S mufflers . If you email Gert, he will happily tell you postage prices now.

POST 17 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I am talking to Gert as we speak. I think the best deal is to purchase his modified exhaust and return your existing exhaust to Gert. His total quote is inclusive of shipping cost to return your existing exhaust. I think I'll go with it. My understanding so far is , that you pay more , the younger the exhaust. 6000 KM exhaust is more expensive  than 60000KM exhaust. I have to confirm , but the deal seems to be: 1250 Euro for modified back Cat exhaust with 500 Euro refund on returning existing. You receive new gear , have it installed here , and within 3 weeks send back your existing stock exhaust. It is a deal for me. Not keen on 10 K modification. There might be some savings in doing 2 or 3 modifications at the same time .

POST 18Original post

You wont regret the Carnewal GT mod ... some try to copy his, but they are no where near as good.

POST 19 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

OK , just placed the order. I am getting 6000KM exhaust back Cat modified , freight to my door for935 Euro. I have to send back my existing exhaust , postage inclusive my purchase price. I am paying initially anther 500 Euro , which will be refunded , once my existing exhaust has been received by Gert in Belgium. They are making some of the best beers in the world , you got to trust them. So , if anybody else jumps in quickly , we save a bit in freight. Looking forward to the sound !!!

POST 21 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thanks, I had cars in the past with awesome sound , so I know what I am missing. V12 6 l (enlarged) Etype ,Extractors, straight pipe , monster sound 👺 Love the typical Porsche growl and crackle , the stock Cayman is too sanitised.

POST 22Original post

Arnie, if I understand correctly, provided you send your exhaust back, your all in cost including postage both ways is €935 ($1650 AUD). i assume imputed in the price is the fact that the new exhaust is 6,000km while the one you are returning one that is likely >50,000km. given it remains looking stock for insurance / police purposes, I think that sounds like a pretty good deal. Would definitely appreciate a follow up on both the sound and the logistics / cost of unfitting and refitting and if you needed to buy any replacement brackets / clamps (and if these are just generic or Porsche OEM) exciting!

POST 23Original post

Don't make the same mistake I made by installing a Fabspeed exhaust on my 987.1 Boxster S - it droned between 2500 - 3000 rpm. It did pop and crackle on downshifts but the drone got old very quickly. It also moved the powerband up the rev range - lost low end torque - not great for urban driving. I now own a 987.2 Spyder which the previous owner install one of Gert Carnewal's modded factory exhaust - it doesn't drone but isn't that loud for my taste. I think this has to do with the differences in the exhausts between the 987.1 and 987.2.

I’ll keep the progress posted. I am thinking of using my own brackets as they look new and have it fitted locally Dande exhaust or Lilydale. Good tip. My car is chip tuned and my torque curve is very different from stock. Very responsive on low revs. I don’t want it too loud , fair enough on a GTS 3 , but I don’t want boy racer for my Cayman. Just that growl that says ‘Porsche’. My tune , lowered and spacers makes it great fun on the ‘twisties’. 😇

Keep us posted regarding the importation process for this - I was engaged with Gerd for one of his Carnewal exhausts, but wasn't sure how the whole import taxes work at the border as the product is north of the $1k mark

POST 30 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Quotes source post: 316983

Once it is all done I write a detailed summary about the process. 😊 Apparently Gert Split into 2 invoices , keeps exhaust below$1000 , no import tax. Maybe GST? Doesn’t really matter. I save myself at least $1000 , looking at Fabspeed and others , and got plenty confirmation that the gear is good.

POST 31 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

interesting thing happened today. Got a call and Email from Fed ex , had to download , fill in , sign and return a declaration , that the item I am importing does not contain any Asbestos. Did all of that , and more or less immediately the item was released in Belgium , on the way now.

POST 32Original post

Just a question for all Cayman folk out there ,I have had my eye on a 987 Cayman purchase ,But with this convid-19 thing have not been able to fly up and have a sticky ,So do not know if I can fit comfortably being  bout 6'2 and around 105 Kg  , So any of you Blokes about the same size and do you fit ok ? Cheers

POST 33 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Quotes source post: 317258

I am about your size , at the moment even a bit heavier than you . I fit in the car , but ‘just’ . Leg room ok , I like to drive more reclined as I could in a 911 , with the mid engine not possible. On serious drives I wear only shirt and no or thin canvass shoes . Big difference , believe it or not . Next step for me will be a thinner sports seat , gives more room and holds you tight in the corners. 🙂

POST 34Original post

Cheers Arne, There's a couple of 987s around the hood here but don’t see them much with the club activities all cancelled, That extra coulple of inches in the 981 could  come into play , The 964 Was a bit weird with the pedal offset but plenty of room once you were in  Cheers  Mate

POST 35 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Quotes source post: 317262

Don’t get me wrong the 987 is adequate. When I got her I was on my fight weight 95kg. I was in and out of the car like a cat. Now a bit more like brown bear out of hibernation. 10-15 kg makes a big difference. My height as such is no issue.

POST 37 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I now have all my costs and options on hand. My exhaust is in transit. You have 2 options with Gert : outright purchase , or purchase against you sending your existing exhaust back to Gert. To me it looks like the outright purchase with you selling your exhaust yourself , seems the better deal. You also look at a difference in cost , depending on the age of the exhaust ,you purchase .My deal.: Back cat Carnewal exhaust , no brackets or tips , less than 6000km ,$2040 , incl. $245 freight. On top of that $89.81 duty , $188,60 GST , $88  entry fee and $200 installation. That is about $2611 , I now sell my mufflers and original tips ( which are mint ) for $600 , my net expense $2000. The same deal with a Carnewal exhaust under 60000 km will save $580 . Net expense about $1400 . The deal with you returning your exhaust is $1530 , Duty, GST , Entry fee $300 , installation $200 , your total $2030 . This is about my coin , BUT I finish up with a near new exhaust. Hope this makes sense and is helpful. Cheers

I thought that the no tax for items under $1000 don't apply anymore? That dickhead Gerry Harvey (Owner of Harvey Norman) managed to convince the current LNP government to stick gst on everything coming into the country from overseas even if it costs a $1.

POST 39 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Quotes source post: 317535

Not sure , but I paid on my purchaseGST and duty. I find local pricing more often than not inflated , (probably due to lack of competition ), and import still more cost effective.

POST 40 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Exhaust arrived , booked for install , cant wait . Wouldn’t you know it. I found on the Cayman Group Facebook page photos of a Carnewal exhaust , which shows the insides . Gives you a good idea what needs to be done . In theory you could copy and do it cheap through a local exhaust business. I try to find the pics and upload. 😊

POST 41Original post

Arnie thanks for sharing the costs and alternatives. I agree that having substantially a “new” exhaust at the end is a good deal. obviously keen to get the “post install” wrap up. i have not read anything about the 987.2 or 981 Carnewal treatments. My understanding is that they have both cats in the pipe work before the muffler rather than having the second cat inside the muffler like the 987.1 does.  I seem to recall someone saying the mod is not quite as loud as it is on 987.1 as I assume the 987.2 gas still needs to pass 2 cats and not one. your post indicated you were going to sell your tip. What tip are you putting on instead? I like the look of the Fabspeed x pipe which seems to have a significantly better flow and a claimed scavenging effect to pull air through. For such great engineers, Porsche were pretty lazy when they designed the t shaped tips, the flow looks rubbish and I can’t help but think this is a significant reason why Boxsters never same as good as 911s with exactly the same engine.

POST 42 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I had taken my stock pipe off and had twin pipes welded on . One per muffler . Better looks and sound. I’ll use those on the new exhaust and sell the stock tip and mufflers.

POST 43Original post

Quotes source post: 317883

As the owner of a 987.2 Cayman, I am interested in feedback on this as well. I have also read that both cats in the 987.2 are in the headers. This suggests that replacing just the headers on a 987.2 with free flowing headers would be the go rather than the cat back exhaust section. There are some headers with 200 cel cats in them and some without any. I assume that removal of both cats will require a tune. Can anyone confirm?

POST 44 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Quotes source post: 317952

I remember when I had my car tuned , the chap told me he had made allowance/tuned for future cat removal without further‘ tuning ‚ necessary.

Job finally done. Great crackle and snarl on downshift. Awesome sound when you open up. Recommend to all. 785F7FD9-9FF5-47BE-97D7-5F535CC86D8E.MOV

POST 46Original post

Arne - v exciting ! Well done. like many others I have been watching vicariously through your purchase. For such a brilliant car Porsche have really tried hard to make them sound rubbish. Many of us are keen to understand if the carnewal can “make it sound like it should”. if you have the inclination and technology it would be good to get a clip while mobile with some of that crackle and pop. for reference is yours a 3.4 or 2.7?

POST 48 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Quotes source posts: 318898, 318912

2.7 .

POST 49 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I just had a good chat with Gert Carnewal in Belgium , giving him feed back , etc. Gert claims the car has to travel at least 100 miles or so for the ECU to adjust to the new airflow and set up . After that you have the final 'product' , so to speak , in terms of sound and response. I guess a bit of essential driving is coming my way. I do the external Go Pro from  there and upload.

POST 51Original post

Sounds great - What was the importation process? Did you have to pay tax at the border? If so, did you have to reach out to a custom agent to clear it?

POST 52 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Customs send invoice , you can pay online , around $360 = GST , Tax and Fees. The gear arrived in 7 days.

POST 54 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Reported by Andrew in Australia, March 2017: I received your exhaust system within 5 days of you sending (Belgium to Australia). I had the system fitted 5 days later with a 'TT' style tip that I had made locally. The sound of the system is excellent and NO DRONE. At idle there is a subtle burble, rev the engine and an exhilarating note fills the air, not too loud, not a high scream more a growl. With driving the car you just want to hear the engine rev (this could lead to trouble with the law as breaking the speed limit is inevitable), the sound in the cabin is great, not disturbing but certainly enough to bring out the racing driver in you. Gear changes are better as you can now hear what the engine is doing. Having completed the 160klm settling in period (ECU auto adjustment) the system has come on song, and is perfect. I choose the Carnewal GT system after months of internet searching, listening, pricing, I beleive that I looked at every system available for the Cayman, the only system that I felt had NO DRONE, was an easy fit and had great reviews was the Carnewal GT (the youtube videos do not give an accurate sound, the exhaust definitely has a better overall tone, less crackly and a lower note). Thank you for great service and a great product. Arne: just saw this review and and I got to say,: ' I say what he says' ,.... , Andrews comments describe it well , I was intrigued by his comment about gear changes ,since I had a 'spirited' run through the gears on a windy section , and  rather than just getting a turbine kind of whine from the back , I can hear the engine telling me where we're at. I am mystified why Porsche would not engineer the exhaust to this sound in the first place. I can promise , once you have driven  a Cayman with this exhaust , you will not want to go back to Stock. Could this have to do with marketing , creating the 'step' in evolution 911/ Cayman , other than reduced horsepower , etc.?

Arne. Agree 100%. I definitely feel Porsche went out of their way to ensure the Boxster/cayman didn’t get the same HP and most certainly didn’t get the same sound as the 911. While frustrating it was smart business as why sabotage a market for selling $230k cars by making the $130k car have the same experience. As a massive Porsche fan, having the company financially sound and viable is a good thing, even if they short changed us cayman and Boxster crowd.

‚Short changed‘ to me is a matter of interpretation. On the one hand you have less HP , on the other hand you get unparalleled handling with this chassis and mid engine concept. Personally I do like hill climbs , tight cornering and pushing to the limit . The Cayman is tons of fun in that  respect. The 2.7 holds its ground well , if I was looking for improvements, probably a 3.4 with ECU tune , 6 speed manual , etc . It seems to be more fun driving flat out in the twisties , than holding back and trying to control too much power. If trackdays were my first love , I would want 450 Hp . For now I am very happy with my croc , the way she handles and theSOUND. 💣

Arne, don’t misunderstand me. I’m not having a crack at the Boxster or cayman. Neither is a 911 but let’s face it, other manufacturers have been trying to match or beat the 911 for 50 years And haven’t come close . Both Boxster and cayman  are great cars in their own right and to call them entry level would be a disservice. They are same but different, superb fun and are ‘proper’ Porsche’s. i am just grumbly about the soundtrack but I think you and grandmaster girt may have part of the solution. P.s. i recall Nick mason commenting that even when you have 900hp, you always wish you had a few more.

POST 58Original post

They all started out engine's moving something. Chaff the wheat, plough the feild. Marketing says one thing. The chassis says another. 😆

POST 59 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Totally agree . 911 is a beast 😁

POST 60Original post

I'm really annoyed that you did such a good job writing the review and providing a video @Arne Krix Now I might have to buy one 😁

Are you in Melbourne?

I'm in Sydney. Like you I've been underwhelmed by the stock soundtrack. Currently considering options as there is a local option for 987 exhaust modification as well.

POST 63 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Bugger, if you were in Melbourne, you could have checked out my car. I hear droning is an issue with a lot of modified systems.i have uploaded a photo of the internal of a Carnewal GT. Maybe run by your local, see what they think.

POST 64Original post

If anyone needs, I have a low mileage set of 987.1 Cayman S rear mufflers that would be a good candidate for modding.

same , I am in Melbourne , my stock mufflers have done 45000 km , looking mint , no rust , come with welded on pipes , for 'Twinpipe ' look when fitted. $350 each.

POST 66Original post

Hi All. I see your posts about looking for a louder meaner sounding exhaust. I do retrofit switchable PSE kits for 996 and 997 which do exactly that in Sport mode. But sound stock in normal Mode. I also have a set of 987 Cayman exhausts in stock and the same switching concept will work when retrofitted on a Cayman / Boxster. So let me know if anyone is interested. The kit I have developed uses a factory dash switch. But is stand alone to the Ecu etc. Also zero drone! Here is a sample on a 996 carrera. VID-20200713-WA0011.mp4

managed to do a short film of the new exhaust, we could only do 60-80 max speeds but it will give you an idea what the sound of the upgrade is like new exhaust inverness road_Trim_Trim.mp4 new exhaust inverness road_Trim_Trim.mp4 new exhaust inverness road_Trim_Trim.mp4 Fetching info...

sound inside the cabin/car much nicer than a microphone stuck on the ass of the car.

POST 72Original post

You must be stoked Arne, great sound, obnoxious, loud n hot. Good result and a quick turn around. Didn't notice any sticks hit your car? Old mate lives there and has a penchant for throwing sticks at repeated loud fast cars on the Inverness Rd hill climb.

Well... we were loud and SLOW , there is a good short speed section towards MT Evelyn , but of course on our short experiment / trip , every dog and his owner were out there as well. Hence the slower approach.

POST 74Original post

Just out of interest, what did you record the audio/video with? looks like a GoPro for video but audio is better than I would expect.

That is right. Standard GoPro, I was surprised about sound quality as well.
