Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

My switch was on it's way out so had it replaced before it broke.

It is also a good idea to use cone-point allen grub screws as a replacement for the slotted ones - it makes it much easier to get them in and out.

Coverage and how to read this overview
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.
14 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

I have 1999 996 carrerra s, The drivers door would not lock on central locking and electronic speedo and mileage readings would not switch off when car locked. Battery goes flat. Does anyone know what problem might be?
Help really appreciated. New to the 996, love it and only had it two weeks and this happened, missus now questioning purchase! Nightmare.
Many thanks.
Nobby
Both may be related to a duff ignition switch.
The cylinders are apparently a relatively common fault.
If the car thinks the key is still in the lock barrel it will run all the ignition circuits including dash display and prevent external central locking.
Alledgedly they last "50k miles".
Fairly simple to change out the broken part.
The ignition switch behind the ignition key barrel breaks up internally and so the contacts no longer connect properly.
VW/Audi dealer or GSF - German and Swedish (and French) can supply the same part:
4A0-905-849-B
Last price check showed it cheaper than OPC/PorscheShop etc - about £20
Access the switch from behind the dash using a set of torx screwdrivers.

Blimey, comes to something when people show off how long their lock barrel lasted.
Welcome to "Porsche World"!
Both those DIYs are for LHD cars. where the steering lock barrel is the other way up. This means that you can't access the ignition switch screws from the underside.
I would happily post my DIY here, but the file size is a bit too big to upload.
Sorry, they were the only guides I could find in the "public domain".
Your PDF file size is fine.
Hope you don't mind me uploading?
I can delete it if you want to host?
I referenced you in the earlier post as I thought it best you respond to the thread before I posted your PDF, particluarly as it is archived as PCGB members only.

Thought there was a 200KB limit. Doh!
A few things I need to add to it:
If you remove the dash speaker (2xT20 torx screws) it gives a bit more light on the subject and another access point.
Make sure you get as much of the red sealant out of the screw holes as possible before trying to undo the screws. Make sure the screwdriver blade is a really good fit in the screw slots too.
It is also a good idea to use cone-point allen grub screws as a replacement for the slotted ones - it makes it much easier to get them in and out. Proper name: Cone point socket set screws. M4x6 if memory serves me correct.
Don't be tempted by a cheapo switch on eBay - most are Chinese made and cr*p quality. Go for a genuine Hella one if possible.
Edit: Revised PDF attached - if Admin sees this and wants to put it in the FAQ section, be my guest.
