Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I had to use my C4S during the winter snow (ironically as my daily driver couldn't move!). I washed it down properly before putting it back in the garage, but then it wasn't used for quite a while. It nearly failed the MOT because the brake discs were corroded. My indy managed to clean them up enough to get through the test, but they are still very juddery. Will they improve with use, or is there anything else I can do to get them right again? Thanks

POST 2Original post

Mine passed the MOT, the front discs look perfect on the outside - but are badly pitted on the inside. It drives and brakes perfectly, but it's always on my mind now. I think I'll just get new disks and pads fitted.

POST 3Original post

Sounds like you may need to get the brakes skimmed

POST 4Original post

Find wide clear open road. Accelerate to licence losing speed. Brake very hard. Repeat several times. Job done. Serouosly, if they can be cured of juddering that will do it.

POST 5Original post

Make sure there is nothing behind you when you brake hard. The 911 pulls up very quickly, I do this action when I've left the car for a while.

POST 6 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thanks folks Took it on a couple of maximum attack B-road runs on Friday to and from work.... seems a bit less gritty feeling, but still juddery. I'll try again tomorrow and see if there's any improvement. If not, I'll see if I can get them skimmed (I'm guessing this involves taking the brakes off and milling the surface?)

POST 7Original post

Most people who have the equipment skim them on the car. Depends where you go as to how much it costs. Autofarm do it (not too far from you) but when I saw their prices a couple of years ago it didn't make any sense. It also depends on how badly they are pitted, as to whether they can be ground and still leave the disk thickness within limits.

POST 8Original post

Bit late for you now but as I have just done my wee routine thought I would throw he post in. My C4S only runs at the weekends so lies at least all week without turning a wheel. Sunday night sees a wash and tidy followed by a once round the block second gear up and full stop about 6-8 times to heat through the brakes and dry off any water before it goes in the garage. This stops any corrosion and also stops that binding that I would get if I put it away wet. Whether you recover these discs or get new ones I highly recommend this process - only takes 5 mins.

POST 10Original post

What a nice way of Porsche saying; "Sorry, but your car has been supplied with rubbish brake discs!" This has never happened to any other car that I've ever owned. I've just replaced the front discs of my 996 after failing to dry them off properly and then not driving the car for a while. Admittedly, this lack of use won't do any brake discs any good but I couldn't believe the state that they were in when I took them off. There was virtually no braking surface left on the inner surfaces of the discs. I wouldn't bother getting them skimmed - you're only patching the leaking dam and you'll end up spending more on replacement discs at a later date anyway. At least you can replace the discs, pads and shims all at the same time. (In fact, I think that you'd have to replace the pads if you got the discs skimmed anyway, wouldn't you..?)

POST 11Original post

I'm curious - how much did you pay for a set of discs and pads. There are loads on e-bay, but the price range can be huge?

POST 12Original post

I think that I paid around £160 for the two front discs and about £65 for the pads. I also renewed the shims and ABS sensors that weren't very expensive at all. It's worth doing the lot if you're going to go to the trouble of doing the job. You can get the lot from ECP www.eurocarparts.com Just put you car reg number in to ensure that you have the correct model as the discs and pads can vary a lot. Adrian.

POST 13Original post

Cheers. And I've just updated another post about reliability....... What the hell - it's wear and tear !

POST 14Original post

Hi My 993 inner surfaces were very rusty and pitted. No amount of hard braking would clean them up and believe me when I say that I tried. New discs and pads from D911 were very reasonable. All the best Berni

POST 15Original post

I've just ordered front and rear brake kits [Discs/pads/shims/sensors] from Design911 for £199 a front or rear set. You get 5% 911uk discount as well. http://www.design911.co.uk/fu/pt66_.../996--911--1997-05/Brake-Pads---Disc-Package/ Don't forget to replace the caliper bolts when you do the brakes. TB
