I'm mostly just venting here, but maybe someone will have a suggestion to help me get my replacement air filter installed. I took the old dirty one out, and really didn't have much trouble at all getting the new one in the housing, but I CANNOT get it to fit over the intake opeing at the rear of the housing. I have very little room to get hold of the thing, and I've tried both from outside the car and getting in behind the driver's seat but I cannot position my arms in a way that will let me get a good grip on the filter to try to get it seated over the oval opening. I've tried twice for 15 minutes or so and given up each time, usually after a time out I can get whatever I was having trouble with to fit right, but so far this one is a monster. I know if I had a helper it would probably go easier, but that isn't an option right now.
This wouldn't happen to be a K&N filter would it?
I've replaced mine twice, and I remember it to be an aggravation each time, though the second time wasn't as bad as the first. All I can tell you is that I do it crouching in the rear trunk, and I think I might have used either my fingers or a screwdriver behind the closed end of the filter, to lever or pry it backwards over the flange opening.
That's what I finally did, got in the trunk so I could get my hands/arms down where they would do the most good. It was really pretty easy then, the biggest problem I had was getting out of the trunk! No, its not a K&N, a regular paper element replacement filter. It came with the plastic end piece that has the mounting "nut" attached. My filter has only been in there around 37,000 miles and Porsche says change it at 40,000, but I didn't want to go that long, andit was pretty dirty, so I'm glad I changed it. This is just another of those things that should be easy but because of the mid-engine design they become difficult.
Reviving this thread, as I was thinking of getting a K&N filter like this:
Porsche Cayman Air Filter | Free Shipping | 2006 - 2010, 2007 - 2008, K&N, Fram
Is there a problem fitting them ? Do you think you really get 1-4 hp improvement?!
I also was thinking about the cone shaped V-flow, but can't see it being worth $275.00 more!!! ( $325 compared to a $50 K&N filter)
EVOMS 987 Cayman S V-Flow Intake - Eurotek Tuning
I just got my Xmas bonus today, so I've got some cash burning a hole in my pocket.
Shopping list:
K&N air intake ------ $50
Dream exhaust ---- $250
clear engine cover - $650
I was also thinking of getting the Softronic ECU flash, but since I just missed the winter special,
maybe I'll wait until next winter!
Next time try some lubricant on the filter fitting. I used a *very* light coating of tool oil wiped on with paper towel. The new filter slid right on.
Hopping in the trunk is the only way I found to do this right!
Funny, I just installed my BMC filter today. It took me about 5 minutes and once I had it positioned correctly just slid on. The rubber they use is very soft and easy to work with.
I also cut back part of the rear bracket so that it does not restrict airflow from where I desnorkled the car. This photo shows what the filter element looks like with part of the bracket cut back.
