Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.
Discussions that suspect a cause
1
0 original-poster resolution reports. Counts can overlap; they are not unique people or a success rate.
0 discussions have direct query context; 0 report a fix in that context. Other evidence may inherit the discussion’s subject.
Suspected cause
Probably a good idea to give it that long for all engines if you want to get a thorough change.
Leading evidence: 'good idea' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, the most frequently mentioned possible cause is 'good idea' (1 discussions; 0 report identifying it and 1 suggest it). The most frequently discussed action is 'Replace after' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

Suspected cause
The issue would need to be traced to an improper oil change, which is hard to do.

Suggestion
I had a friend who needed a simple oil change and the dealer ended up charging him about $2,000 for the oil change after replacing the oil pan.

I think about the biggest issue for doing it yourself it to really use a torque wench and replace the drain plug properly.

If the oil and filter are changed at specified intervals (hopefully you change more often) then you have nothing to worry about.

The P Tech I discussed this with said he uses the extra wait time to do other checks on the car, if he can, so the customer isn't just paying for oil to drip.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

OK, another stupid question....Are there written procedures for maintenane similar to a Chiltons? If so, what is the link to download. Thanks. I want to change my own oil and think 230 bucks is a rip off from the dealer.
Here's the link to the 'Articles' section of the forum where an oil change is described. Not a lot to it. I think the material price is about $70 - and you are right, the dealer oil change is a rip off. Bond with your car and save a few bucks while you're at it!

One thing I recently learned about Cayman oil changes:
Engines with DFI require 60 min minimum to drain (per Porsche Service Technician). Probably a good idea to give it that long for all engines if you want to get a thorough change.
If you change your own oil, how can we prove it in the documentation like the dealer does?
Is changing oil consider a service maintenance? This is for latter resale purpose.
All I've ever done is save all the receipts, both filter and oil, and keep a running log. I can't swear that this would cover all warranty issues especially if the dealer was unfriendly about DIY. Nor can I say it will satisfy every buyer though it should make most happy.
Just in case you are looking for genuine Porsche at wholesale price.

in most states if you keep your own oil change record and a receipt of your parts purchases the dealer can not

deny warranty coverage for servicing your own vehicle. This probably varies somewhat from state to state.
It won't stop them from being a pain about it if they want to. At FCM we keep extensive electronic records for cars that we service and we also have a reasonably good relationship with the local dealers which is a big help if there are warranty issues especially with CPO cars which have higher mileages and are not as likely to be dealer serviced.
I keep a detailed maintenance log as suggested by others. Saving receipts is a good upgrade. When my car gets to the first scheduled service, I'll take it to the local dealer (Winner Porsche). They've been really nice throughout the purchase process and strongly support the local PCA chapter. It was at a PCA monthly meeting held in the service area that I learned from the Porsche Tech about the time to drain the oil, plus a boatload of other useful stuff. So, I don't mind giving them the normal service business. I'll concentrate on doing the pre-DE oil and brake work myself.
I'm curious as well about the length of time. I'm going to the PCA Tech Day at the Porsche NA training center in February and will see if I can get an answer. It may actually not take any longer to drain the engine, but just be that Porsche wants to ensure a more thorough oil change. The P Tech I discussed this with said he uses the extra wait time to do other checks on the car, if he can, so the customer isn't just paying for oil to drip.
I keep a detailed record in a spreadsheet, keep my receipts and make a digital date stamped photo record of the odometer, car up on ramps with full drain pan under, 8 quarts of Mobil 1 lined up with a new filter, license plate, and even the numbers on the front of my house. Don't know if it will help, but it might. I change oil and filter at 5,000 mile intervals.
Do it yourself if you are mechanically inclined and keep your reciepts/records. You won't have a warrantly issue. The issue would need to be traced to an improper oil change, which is hard to do. If the oil and filter are changed at specified intervals (hopefully you change more often) then you have nothing to worry about.
Cheers
I think about the biggest issue for doing it yourself it to really use a torque wench and replace the drain plug properly. Over torquing that plug is potentially a problem, and quick lube shops are also notorious for doing that. I had a friend who needed a simple oil change and the dealer ended up charging him about $2,000 for the oil change after replacing the oil pan. - Aluminum threads are easily damaged!
