Time to replace my OEM front pads. Was looking at Redstuff. Any rants or raves on using these on an non-S 987? May be looking to do a little light autocross as well, but mainly street use.
I put EBC Redstuff on my non-S
Cayman
not too long ago. They work great for the street. Initial bite and stopping power feels slightly stronger than the stock pads and they dust very little - much less than stock. The box said they could take up to 1000 miles to stop squeaking and they did take just about every one of those 1000 miles - but they did stop and after that time period they are now silent.
So I took your advice and went with EBC redstuff on the front. I second your experience, happy with the overall performance but also had squeal for several hundred miles of break-in. (did not turn or replace rotors).
I just installed Redstuff pads and the wife hates the squeaking! I don't know if she will allow the 1000 miles of discomfort until it goes away. Any solutions other than being embarrassed around town for a while (She doesn't drive it every day). I may have to buy OEM pads to make it livable. Under moderate brake apply, it's fine, but the last 50 feet of stopping with light apply its terrible. I know what the break in says, but this is nasty. I have ceramic brakes on our Corvette and it has always been silent. Help?!
I've been a long-time user of EBC Greenstuff and Yellowstuff brake pads in several different
Audi
's and
Porsche
's over the past 8 years, all with good experience. In 2008 I put Redstuff's on my '06 Cs in the quest to cut the dust. Initially, I liked them alot and was very happy with the reduced wheel dusting. But, somewhere along the way in early 2009 I got pad transfer to the rotors with resulting severe brake shudder (acting like the
rotor
was warped). On inspection the
rotor
's were still true except where pad element was deposited. Over the
next
several weeks I continued to regrind the rotors using my electric drill and 3M abrasive pads to try to remove the transferred material and clean them up. It helped but never cured the problem. So into the trash went the Redstuff's. I'm done with the EBC line.
Did you use any anti-squeal compound between the pads and shims when you installed them? If not, that would probably help somewhat. You can also chamfer or bevel the leading edges of the pads to help a little.
I've used yellowstuff for my previous
Audi
which I used on the track a fair bit.
I found that they were marginally better than OEM with a slightly higher temp handling, however the pads felt a lot more "wooden" with less feel through the pedal. Red and yellowstuff pads are both more abrasive than stock OEM pads so keep that in mind when looking for
rotor
life e.t.c
After a three or four track sessions some of the edges of the pads chipped off, they gave reasonably long life compared to OEM but the dust situation hardly improved and the squealing annoyed me. I would stick with OEM for road use from previous experience or go right to the top for some race Pagid's for track use.
The old issue with material transfer or glazing onto the discs I believe was some of the older compounds which have now changed.
I also got rid of the squealing after a hard track day or getting the brakes quite hot. It would go away for a few weeks then return!
