Suggestion

This being my first sports car, I had no idea why it's this low but I assumed that the engine demanded stronger or better sparks and uses special plugs.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1Original post

Did a search and read various threads; didn't see my question addressed, so here it is: The owner's manual for my 2008 base Cayman has a 36,000 mile spark plug interval. This being my first sports car, I had no idea why it's this low but I assumed that the engine demanded stronger or better sparks and uses special plugs. Just to be sure, I called up my local Porsche-only mechanic for a quote. He was puzzled and told me that his service manual and his friend at a dealer agreed that these are usually changed at 60K. I also read around the interwebs that older manuals specify a longer service interval for the plugs. I am inclined to have the dealer change them anyway just to please the warranty gods--I know for sure what the dealer's service dept. would recommend. I do not track my car or drive hard for any extended amount of time. The car has just over 36K now. What do you guys think, considering that some have had difficulty in warranty claims because they weren't following the maintenance schedule? Thanks in advance and happy motoring!

POST 2Original post

Porsche wants the plugs out at 4 yrs/36K miles to avoid having the threads seize on the engine block. Then that would be a major hassle to tear the engine apart. I'll be at 4 year with the car next year and I will get new plugs.

POST 3Original post

The service advisor at the dealership that I take my car to has advised me to consider replacing them at 60K. He didn't think it was necessary to do at 4 years(unless the car is a garage queen and 60K will not be put in decades)

POST 4Original post

What kind of plugs do late model Caymans and Boxters use? Copper? Platinum? If they are still using copper plugs, then 36k is appropriate.
