Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Suggestion

re notchy gear change from cold - i am a mechanical cabbage when it comes to cars - but have stiff gears when starting from cold - i read long time ago that on old ferrari's they used to shift from 1st straight to 3rd as the configuration of the gearbox and the lubricants meant that the box had to warm up sufficiently before 2nd could be used - so now i never force the gears when they feel notchy but gently push them thru for fear that they are not lubricated sufficiently - on same note i also wait until the oil temp is at operating temp before using high revs.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Back after an exhilarating 19 day trip round Europe. 3,381 glorious trouble-free miles. And still grinning. Everything Judy and I expected, and more so all the more sorry to read some of the negative posts recently. High spot: many great driving roads but one stands out. Anyone who gets the chance should experience the S.48 to the west of Cortina d'Ampezzo. 40 hairpins up to the top of the pass and then 40 down the other side trying to keep up with the bikers! Low point: someone keyed the paintwork when we were parked somewhere between San Gimonagno and Portofino. I'd have killed them if I'd seen them. And if I didnt, Judy would have. One semi-technical query. The gear shifter really loosens up after a spell of hard driving and then gets taughter again overnight. Is this normal? Anyone?

POST 2Original post

Sounds like you had a great trip, Paul. I envy you. Too bad about the keying. That can put a damper on things. Do you have any neat pics of car and scenery?

POST 3 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Don - it really was great. Took a few pictures but not many, it meant stopping and getting out of the car! But may have one or two in the Alps that I can post when I get them developed and figure out how the scanner works. Watch this space. Any comment on the gear shifter phenomenon?

POST 4Original post

hey Paul! Glad to know that you take a good moment around here! I love the roads in Italy..and the Toscane region around Portofino ant the region of Cinco 'e terre .just great! Sorry about the scratch..over your paintwork.

POST 5Original post

Wife and I did the tour of the castles of europe in may of 01 in our C4, beautiful countryside, wonderful people, excellent wheels. Gear-shifter... Right-hand drive, try hefting a few in the morning using your left elbow, loosens things up a bit in the AM!

POST 6 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hi Bilstein. The thing that always amazes me about Italy especially is the almost complete lack of roadworks, virtually no police and no speed cameras at all. Driving is a total pleasure.

POST 7 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hi Willwest. How did you drive the C4 from Seattle to Europe? That must have taken a few! Will no-one take me seriously about the shifter?

POST 8Original post

Hi Paul, I have a C2 built in June 2002, with about 1300 miltes (I only received the car in Aug due to Porsche's decision to ship it to the east coast instead of the west). I also notice a little difference between shifting when the car is cold vs. warmed up. I wouldn't call it rough, but it is definitely tighter and not as silky as when it gets going a little. Hopefully it isn't any thing to worry about.

POST 9 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hi Aen! I rather like the 'notchy' feel and I got a bit alarmed the first time I felt it was a little slack. But I got used to it and it hasn't given me any problems. Its just that I dont realy know if its right or not.

POST 10Original post

Shiftless in Seattle. (NOT Tip, just a pun) I did/do take you seriously, just don't have anything constructive to contribute. Actually did pick it up at POE, Charleston SC, and drove it home to Seattle with a 4th of July stop-over in Memphis.

POST 11Original post

I do find the transmission oil does seem to stiffen up when cold/not used. When I bought my car, it had been sitting for 2 months, and the shifter was extremely stiff and slow. After awhile, the oil loosens up, and its as smooth as it should be. So I can see the temperature affecting the shift feel.
