Read evidence and context
Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Reported cause
Gonzo, your problem is fairly common and is caused by braking, not acceleration.
Leading evidence: 'braking, not acceleration' (1 discussions report identifying this cause; no attributable repair resolution). Across 1 matching discussions, the most frequently mentioned possible cause is 'braking, not acceleration' (1 discussions; 1 report identifying it and 0 suggest it). The most frequently discussed action is 'Check rollover' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

Prior to a recent DE run at Road America I marked my tires & rims with a wax pencil to check for rollover.

At DE events, after first run the tires are almost flat.

Suggestion
Perhaps we should drill through the rim halves like pro-dragracers and use sheetmetal screws to attach the tire beads to the tire.......ouch I dont want to do that.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I pilot an 2001 996 Coupe with 7800 miles on the OEM Pirelli P-Zero's. 225/40ZR18 front, 265/35ZR18 rear. In the scenerio below I was seeing front HOT pressure of 38.5-41.5 and rears of 40.5-42. Outside temp 75F.
Prior to a recent DE run at Road America I marked my tires & rims with a wax pencil to check for rollover. Following the run, what I found was that the rim mark was nearly 5" away from the tire mark on one tire and had moved on all tires indicating that the tire had rotated either under braking or acceleration on the rim.
The Hoosier reps onsite seemed to feel that this was expected from OEM tires and was not a safety issue as long as they continued to keep their pressure.
What do you think? Thanks for your help!
I have a good buddy that has Hoosiers on his 17 inch rims and they will not even hold air. The bead of tire lets air pass by. At DE events, after first run the tires are almost flat. It is very dangerous. This is why I use my street tires. Good Luck all.
How do you keep the wheel balanced when the tyre rotates on the rim???
At the very least, you now need to have the wheels rebalanced.
This can happen when tyres are new and excessive lubricant is used and then enough time hasn't passed to allow it to dry.
I've noticed that my dealer now always marks the tyres when newly mounted as you did so that they can identify the problem should this happen.
S.
It is not a problem with the tire make, Hoosier or what ever. How long where the tires on the car before you did the DE?
Your buddy's wheels are either bad or the installer is making a mistake.
To clarify, the tires are Pirelli. I only happened to ask the Hoosier people on hand their opinion.
THe tires have never been off the rims and have approximately 7500 miles on them, they're still in decent shape. I have noticed what I perceive to be balance issues on the tires.
Gonzo, your problem is fairly common and is caused by braking, not acceleration. This is especially true at Road America where you have three very heavy braking zones. Think about the forces at work dropping into turn 5 at 140 or so. You will have to rebalance your tires from time to time but I don't think there is any other serious issue.
As for John's comments, Hoosiers seem to be slightly more prone to mounting problems but losing large amount of air is not normal and is certainly not a reason to stick with street tires.
Jim
Hi Jim,
You are correct, it is not normal. I believe my post was not as I meant it. I stick to street tires not because of this tire rotating on rim or losing air, but because I need to become a better driver and learn this particular car better before I get into sticky tires or big suspension, etc.
Having said that, thursday will be my 7th DE this summer and will be at Lime Rock Park in CT. Wish me luck, I love that track!!
Good Luck all...
this topic is very interesting......I will have to mark my tires and see if they are moving on the wheels. If they are .........that lousing up acceleration/ braking and all kinds of stuff.
who else has check this out? Perhaps we should drill through the rim halves like pro-dragracers and use sheetmetal screws to attach the tire beads to the tire.......ouch I dont want to do that.
Actually I think "fairly common" was a bit of an over-statement. Maybe, "not unheard of" would have been a better choice of words. I suspect after this weekend's track days we will have some good research on the topic.
