So if you were to bypass the muffler in a 1.2 engined vehicle using a similar method (1" pipe) you wouldn't suffer from the lack of back pressure issues, but the sound would not increase by any dramatic amount?

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

7 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I'm booked in to have my exhaust modded next week (Oettle style). What's the difference between this, which sounds great, and the 'big bore' exhausts the chavs fit to their Polos and Puntos? It's my understanding that a well performed mod on a 996 exhaust will greatly improve the sound without the drone, and that these chavvy exhausts usually have a constant drone. So what's the cause? Do 996s (and other cars of this ilk) sound great because they've got a great engine to back them up? Likewise, to the Puntos sound terrible because they've got a relatively weak engine? Do they drone more because the silencer is bypassed to a greater extent in order to increase volume? Just curious.

POST 2Original post

Usually a drainpipe instead of the last muffler (silencer). Weak and weedy 1.2 litre engine now with no back pressure to efficiently run the engine. If you fit Cup bypass pipes on a 996 etc your ears will bleed with both the noise level and the hideous sound. That's NO mufflers at all!

POST 3 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

So if you were to bypass the muffler in a 1.2 engined vehicle using a similar method (1" pipe) you wouldn't suffer from the lack of back pressure issues, but the sound would not increase by any dramatic amount? So the only way to get their desired increase in sound it so install a drainpipe, which increases volume, but leads to a constant drone (as there's no muffler at all) and lack of back pressure. With 996s (for example) just a small bypass can increase the sound dramatically (because of the increased power of the engine pushing more fumes out of the exhaust), but doesn't drone because when not under wide open throttle little air is bypassing the muffler. Is that remotely right?

POST 4Original post

Do not know much about exhausts, but what I can say is that I bought Oettle muffers from Germany and they sound fantastic. Nice burble at tickover, sounds meaty up to 3000rpm and above that the dogs bo**ocks.Fairly quiet at motorway cruising speeds. Excellent value at £450

POST 5Original post

Sounds reasonable. Note: at low rpm, partial throttle very little gas escapes via the the bypass. However, 4k+ rpm WOT :cloud9:

POST 6Original post

Hi, Afraid I can't help with the original question, but I have an equally potentially stupid exhaust question regarding the Oettle modification. I've recently bought a 996TT and have read about the Oettle modification or Hayward & Scott doing the same. I just want a bit more noise but don't want to loose power. I spoke to H&S who said they'd never done it to a Turbo before so they don't know if it would work or upset the opperation of the turbo. Has anyone had the modification to a Turbo? Thanks Ollie

It is possible because sports and classic offer it as a service: http://www.sportsandclassic.com/index.php?page=products_performance However, it's about double the price so I suspect there's a lot more work involved.
