Hi guys!
Been reading a lot of thread about putting in your custom car audio system in the
Boxster
. I own a 2007 987
Boxster Base
. My car comes with a very basic standard sound system; yes! No Sound Plus or
Bose
The CDR-24 Head Unit is appalling to say the least. So I want to get a new head unit at the very least. I’m also thinking of upgrading my speakers, probably but component speakers to replace the pair of woofers, mid-range drivers and the corner tweeters on the dash (I don’t really care about the center one). Now my budget is limited to $1500 and this is where the problem is. I have a ton of questions and thought you wonderful guys here are the best people to answer them.
1. Is it really worth getting the rear speakers everyone’s been talking about? I don’t have the rear storage compartment and hence putting speakers there will eat away a lot of my budget.
2. I know I’ll notice a difference but is just changing the head unit sufficient to get a good audio experience?
3. Let’s say, I swap out the speakers for a better set, should I also get an amp? Will it make a considerable difference?
4. Finally, while I’ve done a few jobs with cars (replace power window regulators, swap
alternator
, etc), I’ve never tackled audio and I’d like to leave it to the professionals. So do you guys know how much would it roughly cost to get the audio upgrade done?
From what I’ve searched for, to keep it under the budget and get speakers and amp, I can only spend $500 & $300 respectively on them (considering $250 for Euro motorspeed kit, $400 for a good head unit and $50 for a cables, connectors and miscellaneous - $250+$400+$50+$500+$300 = $1500). Of course please feel free to give me suggestions and where to spend more and where to spend less.
I look forward to your answers and suggestions!!! Thank you all
I upgraded the 'plus' audio system in my 2009
Cayman
about a year ago. A new headunit, the Euro Motorspeed kit (which is awesome) and a 6 channel class D amp. In my opinion you will get much more bang for the buck with an amp as opposed to upgrading the speakers - my stock speakers actually aren't that bad. I went with the Alpine ICS-X7HD indash and the JL Audio XD600/6 amp and am very pleased. Sorry I can't help with the rear speaker question, just not sure how they contribute in the
Boxster
(so you only have 4 channels that need driving at the moment). You will absolutely notice a difference with just a headunit, but add the amp and you will drastically improve the listening experience. And you will probably pay less for the amp install vs just a single pair of speakers. And if you have the woofers in the doors, they create a fair amount of bass when amped properly as well.
Good luck!
Thanks a lot for the reply! I guess that makes a lot of sense
Since you have the 'plus' package, I was wondering, if the speakers in the 'plus' package and the basic package are the same ? If the addition of the amplifier is the only difference between the two packages ?
Not positive but I think they are. Mine came with 9 speakers - the center channel, 2 dash tweeters, 2 door mid ranges, 2 door woofers, and the 2 rear speakers (total of 7 amplified channels). Does the basic package not come with an external amp? Even if it doesn't, I think there is a spot for it in the frunk on the firewall.
The basic package comes with all the speakers except the rear speakers. But I remember reading somewhere that there are 4 speakers (in two sets of course) in the rear shelf.
I just opened the frunk and found something in there. Could this be the amp or is this something else ? Let me know what you think. I've attached pictures for your reference.
That's not the amplifier, it's mounted lower in the frunk
Guess the basic sound system does not come with the amplifier. This is what I see in my frunk.
Can an aftermarket amplifier be fitted here ? Is the necessary wiring already here ?
The stock speakers are paper cones with no real indication what they are (or who made them), I'm thinking they are 4 ohm nominal but not sure what they drop down to. Get a six channel amp and drive your aftermarket speakers properly (bypass the crossovers), it's not a big step up cost-wise.
