Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1Original post

I am experiencing a white residue around my battery. What is the best way to clean this area without spreading the corrosive white stuff? I read that baking soda and water works to neutralize the white stuff, but I am concerned about flushing water in this area of the car. The area around the battery seems to be exposed to the elements so I'm assuming it has water drains. Thoughts?

POST 3Original post

The white stuff is around the base of the battery, not the terminals. See photo. I think the guy I bought the car from replaced a failing battery, but did not clean the area. My thought is to remove the battery, put baking soda around the area, and then spray with water. I'm hoping the water drains out of the area, although I'm concerned I would get battery acid all over the surrounding equipment and down the drain holes.

POST 4Original post

if you watch the video, it says mix one heaping tablespoon of baking soda and one pint of water. You can use that solution to wet and wipe off the corrosion on the battery tray. Maybe even scrub it with an old toothbrush before wiping it off.

POST 5Original post

Had the same thing in a 986 removed battery & used baking soda with water & rinsed.

POST 6Original post

You need to find the source of the battery acid leak. Be sure the drain hose that connects to the battery is intact.

POST 7Original post

just hot water works to clean it. nothing needs to be added.

POST 8Original post

The baking soda neutralizes the acid. Unless your wanting to spread the acid around a bit I'd suggest using it.

POST 9Original post

Should you consider removing the battery, given it's location, if you've got a bad back GET SOMEONE ELSE TO DO IT even if it costs you money. You won't regret this advice. And to the two above posts . . . yes water alone sort of works, but without baking soda you're inevitably left with a corrosive low pH unless you wash forever.

POST 10Original post

I usually use pepsi, coke, or sprite. (not kidding) The leftover sugar residue helps to coat against future buildup.

POST 11Original post

+1 on baking soda as a cheap base to neutralize the battery acid.
