Hi guys, about to order a Cayman 2.9, my first Porsche
Instead of going for PCM, bluetooth and Universal Audio Interface I'm thinking of just ordering it with the standard stereo (but with Sound Package Plus to get the extra speakers) and having a double din setup from Alpine or Kenwood fitted. Before I do this however, I need to get to the truth of all the conflicting opinions that I've been fed from various people, and googling has not helped, so I wonder if someone could put me straight.
Is it true that the latest Caymans (Caymen?
)/Boxsters can't have an aftermarket stereo fitted because they use an optical fibre link, or is this complete bull?
By the way, is the latest revision still called a 987 or has it been given another number?
TIA
Andy
Aswall, it is definitely possible to have aftermarket stereos fitted to Cayman and it is definitely possible on the new generation (987.2) as well... in fact there is a picture of it on Porsche's own website in the gallery section for the model because they support it in Japan where the PCM doesn't work.
However, there is no easy adapter for the new generation Cayman yet... though there are people working on it and we have pretty much figured out what all the wires are, I'm sure an interface will be on the market soon.
Thanks for that suneet  Does that mean that currently an audio firm could wire in an aftermarket unit without problems, but without an adapter I probably couldn't do it myself? I have to admit I would be terrified at screwing something up and would definitely leave it to a professional. I just wouldn't want to order the car with the basic stereo and be stuck with it.
Hi,
I can't speak to the 09 in particular because apparently they changed
all the connectors on the back of the head unit. I can tell you the the
fiber optic stuff is a non-issue. If you are putting a new head unit in, the
fiber optics are irrelevant. There are good aftermarket devices that tap
into the fiber optic loop to add iPods, etc. but you won't need any of that.
I suspect that you will love your new Cayman, I'm pretty fond of mine.
