So a change from Porsche with both the 718 GT4 manual and more so PDK, I wonder what a 992 GT3 PDK is doing at 75 mph in top

Has anybody here taken delivery of a PDK GT4 yet? If so would you mind posting what the rpm at 75mph in 7th is, please? -I've not kept up to date, maybe no-one has as yet.
It's a hang up I have with GT cars that the top gear is short but from looking at the ratios posted in the GT4RS thread maybe the 718 GT4 PDK has a reasonably high top gear?
Cheers

What's your concern? Noise levels or fuel economy?
I’ve owned a 981 GT4 and then a 991.2 GT3 and not having a high cruising gear in those annoyed me. Yes, Noise and fuel economy. Loved the GT3 on track, it was epic, but I’d like to drive there in comfort.
As I always say it’s just me, no one else minds and I’m not saying Porsche are ‘wrong’, we all have different likes and dislikes
Big change for me if the current GT4 has the same 7th as my GTS, wish I’d taken the allocation last year! Anyone got one??
7th gear is long with the PDK gearbox I believe, it's a classic overdrive gear and top speed is achieved in 6th. It's the same gearbox as used in the other 718 models, not sure about the final drive though.
I'm pretty sure it's longer than the 6th in the manual 'box, so it would seem to be what you're after.
981 PDK figures look wrong in above chart.
I have a 981 GTS PDK and rev limit is fair bit lower than this table says...that's partly why went for PDK over manual! I reckon 981 PDK gearing is the same as we are seeing here for 718 GT4 PDK, i.e. about 77mph at max RPM in 2nd gear

Yeah, they look insanely long. That means the 981s would hit top speed in 5th gear, but not quite max that gear, and still have 2 more gears to go....

Didn't AP in one of the reveal interviews state the car does just over 60 in second gear ?
That's the GT4RS, which has much shortened ratios. We're talking regular GT4 here

Exactly, it’s all about theoretical max speed against rpm in 7th, the 981 GTS pdk and 718 pdk seem very similar, hopefully Supersec will confirm but from his initial reply above it appears the 718 has a nice high 7th for cruising…
Immaterial anyway, I’m can’t stomach paying £20k overs for one and no build slots apparently

FYI motorway run in a 4.0 GTS PDK
That is very impressive indeed for a 4.0 litre 400bhp engine! Can't imagine the 718S with the 2.5 being much better than that?

Very good indeed, but what rpm at around 75 mph???
(Please)

Yes this comes up regularly. Although the Final Drive of 3.25 would lead you to think those speeds, there must be a reduction in the box itself because 7th is about 33mph per 1000.

The 4.0 GT4 runs at a very high temp 110 degrees water and oil. In fact I questioned this with my OPC why it was so high esp compared to the 4.0 GT3 which only runs top 80s. Perfectly normal they all do that sir apparantly.
:
Must help with the fuel economy too I reckon.

The high gearing and the coast mode (lift off and the car coasts in neutral effectively with PDK)) gives very good motorway economy relative to less impressive economy in give and take motoring.

Also not that it’s relevant for you but this GTS vs my old 981 GTS is much much less droney on the motorway, just done a 4hr trek and it was a pleasure

Thanks, that’s a big difference to usability, for me, over a manual GT4 at 3100 (ish) rpm
Assuming the manual 718 GT4 is the same as the 981 version
For reference, the 718 GT4 in 6th gear at 75mph runs at 2,850 rpm.

I was quite surprised when I saw how hot my 981 GT4 ran. But pressing the Sport/autoblip button brings both temps down about 10 degrees. Something about engaging an oil radiator IIRC.

Thank you Twinfan, what is it in 7th though with PDK? that’s an ‘improvement’ on the GT3 and 981 GT4 as it must be around 2100?
Sod it, going against what said at the start I can’t resist the GT3 again, might get a rally headset
No idea I'm afraid matey, my car is Spanish
I was out in it this morning and was crusing along the motorway and remembered this thread, hence speeding up briefly and making a note of the revs for reference
Looks like
718 GTS 4.0 PDK 2400 rpm at 75mph
718 GT4 Manual 2850 rpm at 75
718 GT4 PDK 2400 rpm at 75
From memory the 981 GT4 was around 3100 rpm, same as a 991 GT3 PDK
So a change from Porsche with both the 718 GT4 manual and more so PDK, I wonder what a 992 GT3 PDK is doing at 75 mph in top
I do realise no one else cares though..... I'll get me coat

I'm not sure that (economy apart) it's a big deal - at motorway speeds tyre roar is the big issue. Pre particulate filter a drone from the exhaust was mentioned by some as an issue with the Sports exhausts at motorway speeds. Not sure if that has gone away.

As I said, no one else minds apart from me, I find the high revs on the motorway really irritating, so I’m pleased the 718 PDK is different. I’ll try and find a slot next year but don’t hold much hope.

I mind which is why I sold my daily (manual M2Comp). FWIW I have a 981 Spyder and can’t make sense of the figures in the first chart!

Yep you can press the button, but also the car will also open the 3rd Rad automatically once threshold has been reached.
In general they do run hot. Nothing to be concerned with as long as you have correct oil and coolant levels.

Appreciate this is about the 718, but does anyone happen to know the details for the 981s PDK?
The 981 GTS is 2050 rpm at 75 mph (obv. no PDK GT4 981)

Thanks. That's a nice long 7th for the motorway.
We've had figures of between 31 and 36 or so/1000 rpm quoted for PDK 981s. Clearly a few are wide of the mark because I very much doubt there has been any change in the gearing over the life of the car.

Depends if it's a 981GTS or a 718GT4?? Which post mentioned anything different for rpm/mph in a 981 PDK, I must be missing something. Yesterday I drove 190 miles to drop my GTS off at Porsche Bolton, definitely 2050 rpm at 75 mph, I was watching it for 3 hours.

Whilst Porsche odometers are reasonably accurate they nevertheless still over read.

I quoted 33 for a start. You quote 36.5. I'm not sure who is right because I can't say for sure how accurate either your or my revcounter is.

Oh ok, so talking about a 981 PDK GTS right? The two I have driven have been exactly the same, have you had / have one that is different? Genuinely interested if there is variance. Should mention on std fitment P Zero tyres 20" of course.

Mine was a 981S - on 19" wheels but the rolling radius the same as the 20s because of the higher profile tyres. Nothing anywhere to suggest that the GTS has different gearing from the S.

Apart from the reading I've seen on two 981 GTS's and you have seen on an S?
The thread was about does the 718 GT4 have a higher top gear to allow slightly more relaxed motorway progress, which it does. Some care about this, others do not, we're all different thankfully. Next year I'll try and order a GT4 PDK on the back of this but will probably not find an allocation.
On the plus side for you also my 981 GTS droned quite a bit on the motorway at these kind of speeds (standard exhaust)
The 4.0 is a much much better motorway companion, barely any drone at all - a huge improvement.
