Just completed installing an AVIC F-900BT today and wanted to say thank you for all the posts and articles which made the install possible for me. I have installed a few car stereos previously but I was pretty unsure about hacking in to my new car.
I used the kit from EuroMotorSpeed and I was very happy with it. The fascia is as close to OEM as I believe you will get and the service was excellent. These guys were kind enough to email me after my purchase to let me know they were shortly discounting the product and offered me store credit for the difference! I don't feel its worth buying an additional canbus adapter as you can tap one of the wires for the switched 12v and the VSS & illumination wires are quite easy to run (although does take a bit longer).
I've attached a few photos for areas that I spent a while working out, all credit to other posters, but I thought I'd put them in one thread:
This is where I spliced in the VSS wire.

I had to remove the battery to allow access to the circular rubber grommet in the photo, through which I was able to route the wires for the VSS signal and the GPS antenna, into the drivers footwell.

Instead of running a wire from the fuse box to obtain a switched 12v for the head unit I tapped into the canbus on the green wire.

I've still had a couple of issues though - hope somebody can help:
I've found the radio reception to be much poorer than with the stock radio - I have connected power to the antenna wire (i believe)? Is this usual with the Pioneer's or have I done something wrong?
Also when wiring it up I noticed what looked like 4 speaker outputs. I have the basic sound package - do you think there is speaker cable to the back speaker grilles? I have pair of speakers that would fit perfectly in there
Thanks,
Steve
Just a quick update.
After all the time spent installing this, unfortuantely the Pioneer had a melt down and refused to start. Having used it for around two weeks I wasn't that pleased with my unit and so the shop kindly refunded my money.
As there aren't that many options that I like I have refitted my CDR-24 and will hold on to see if I can pick up a cheap PCM in the future. I'll be selling the fasica kit (will stick it in classifieds and on ebay over weekend).
Main thing is that I'm so pleased that I didn't hack in to the wires as it took less than an hour to reinstall the OEM unit. The shop that I bought it from said they would have cut the cables and hacked the CDR-24 to make the fascia.
Anyone selling a cheap PCM in the UK
The Pioneer F series have many issues. I was going to get one myself but heard of all the problems. I am waiting for the new Kenwoods for 2009 myself.
Yeah the new Kenwoods do look great. However the 9240 (UK) will cost exactly double the the F900 at £1299. I think I'll keep in eye on them and see what the reviews are like but for that price I think I'd rather see if I could pick up a used PCM.
I've got the Alpine 505 with Blackbird Nav, it's a good unit and does everything I need (Ipod USB, Iphone via bluetooth, etc...). It's not perfect, but prob a lot better than the Pioneers in terms of reliability! Looks good too...
Just had a quick and have to say that Alpine looks good and I wish I'd seen it as an option in the beggining!! What does look quite interesting is those Apple Mac Mini Carputer's!! I'm having a tentitive nose around that but am a million miles from actually doing anything
