I'm also assuming there is probably a HD tuner made for cars so that you don't have to do the AC to DC conversion.

The next challenge would be to run a cable to create a nice antenna that will give you a good signal without looking like your car just grew some rabbit ears...and that in a nutshell should do it.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1Original post

As the title says, I am now looking to get somesort of TV minitor, DVD player fitted into the car, I really dont require Sat/nav as i have a snooper. I have searched, EBay and the likes to find some kind of TV from a 997 or boxster but nothing up for grabs, Has anybody overcome this in anyway, is there a site i can buy from direct that will go in. Thanks for any help James

POST 2Original post

Why? Why does anyone need the ability to play movies in a two seater? I just don't get it.

POST 3Original post

Im driving to the nurbergring from aberdeen, 1000's of miles over a few days, i wouldnt mind chucking a couple of films on, and let either my mate or girlfriend in the car not die of boredom, I really am wanting to do this in an un-tacky way, so it looks professional. James

POST 4Original post

Honestly, why make this a permanent modification to your car if its just for a road trip... buy a portable unit. Though I'll warn you.. there's a reason having a video player in the front of the cabin is illegal...

POST 5Original post

Buy a portable unit! Can't figure out why anyone would want a built-in DVD player in a 2 seater sports car.

POST 7Original post

Guys,.. bambino don,( interesting handle), is asking for tech info. He doesn't need our comments and sermons about how each of us feels about his personal adult decisions. ( Tho good humor is ALWAYS wanted!)... So if we don't have any info ( or good humor), then maybe just move on. Maybe for him, LISTENING to an actual movie, is better than listening to the same story read to you as a 'BOOK ON TAPE'... Whatever the case, I think he is asking for technical mod info only, and that is what this particular forum is about.

POST 8Original post

Well, whatever you do, don't use the search function! (hint: there's lots of threads on this... here's one !)

POST 9Original post

If you cannot find what you are looking for, just purchase a LCD projector and mount it on the rear engine cover so it can project the image on your windshield. This way you can watch a movie AND keep your eyes towards the road. Or you can just get a portable unit, there are some good ones out there, if that makes you feel better.

POST 10Original post

I have an Alpine hub (VPA-B222) that sits under the passenger seat. Attached to this hub is an I-pod with Video, DVD player, Navigation, XM and in car camera for track days. There is also an input for TV that I didn’t use. The 7 inch Bluetooth integrated VGA touch screen display replaced the stock radio position. Two Alpine amps to drive the system. Beautifully installed and a thing to behold. This week I am taking out everything in my car that adds weight including this system since my Cayman spends almost 95% of the time on the track. I was very difficult to make this move but there is a need for speed. Hope this helps.

POST 11Original post

Thank you for your basic de-briefing of this Post. Too whom it may concern, I had searched the forum for what i was hoping to be the answer and could only find people's views on Double din units and fibre optic cables and remote wires or whatever, being as i pay other people to do any work too any car i own ( including plenty of TV installs) i dont require too be a smart *** on the installation of Audio Equipment and infact the Porsche Cayman. So peoples BS and mocking doesnt interest me. I had hoped someone would blast up a pic of a unit fixed into the position where the current stereo resides and explain ''you can do this, you will have too get them to do it like that and it will cost you $xxxx'', Simple Tbh it seems a pain in the preverbial so may have to ditch my idea and lets face it would prob look S**t!!! It would have made the hours dissappear rather than listening to the same songs and same rubbish chart music on the radio!!! as i drive solid for 5days with the GF, i'd Rather have Gone in 60 secs play in the background, im sure someone catches my idea!! Again if anybody does have an answer i would like too still hear it Thank you James

POST 12Original post

Thank you for the details that was exactly what i required!! Good Lad!! James

POST 13Original post

Well, I do not know how well this would work for you, as you wold need a custom shop with way more skills that a regular install. I personally plan on finding a used but functionally defunct PCM unit, removing all of the electronics and the screen. That should leave me the plastic shroud, and the buttons. I then plan on soldering the buttons, to a USB controller that I have for DIY'ers. Then I am going to write a driver that allows me to read the values from the buttons. Refill the LCD screen area of the plastic shroud with a touchscreen lcd, and connect ti all up to a mini-itx computer, that I place in the front trunk area. I have not decided if I am going to write my own software, or use one of the commercially available ones. If I decide to use one of the commerically available ones, it would need some type of open API or SDK so I can hook my usb button controller into the software.

POST 14Original post

Not that I have done it but it is truly such an easy fix for anyone with an aftermarket DVD nav system built into the car. Btw, this is for technical references only and I'm not encouraging anyone to do it Well everyone that has bought one of those HD tuner to convert their old analog TV to digital TV will realize those boxes are essentially a TV Tuner with RCA output wires. On most aftermarket DVD nav system there is an aux channel input with your familiar red/white and yellow for video input. Plug it in there and it should play just fine. Put in a converter for the AC to DC, hide the box somewhere you can still get the infrared channel to work with the remote and your golden. The next challenge would be to run a cable to create a nice antenna that will give you a good signal without looking like your car just grew some rabbit ears...and that in a nutshell should do it. I'm also assuming there is probably a HD tuner made for cars so that you don't have to do the AC to DC conversion. Anyways, thats my theory is that a $40 tv tuner is going to make it happen. Cheerios!

POST 15Original post

I have an Eclipse AVN Nav unit with DVD playback. There is a TV module that can be added, but I never installed it. It would be very easy to add. The DVD playback has a 'safety' that requires the parking brake to be engaged so you don't watch movies while driving. This can be (and was) defeated by grounding that connection so movies can be played anytime. It has been used a couple times on soccer road trips with my daughter. She watches the movie. I do not (obviously). Good luck.
