Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hi guys. A friend of mine just recently bought a 2001 996 C2 with 56K miles on the clock after previously owning a 986, which was tragically totaled after being rear ended by some young girl texting while driving, I think. He sent me a couple questions that I thought I'd send out to the 996 audience here to see if it's normal or not. At 35 MPH indicated, he says he hears a whine coming from the rear of the car. The whine is audible from 35 - 55 and then goes away after 55. There is no vibration that he can detect. A forum search came up with "possibly time to change the gear oil." The question is whether this is a normal noise on the 996 C2 or not. The second question was related to tire wear, but I don't have enough info to pose it here. Thanks in advance.

I will get it repainted if the new owner would like. This has hands down been the most fun car I have ever owned. I have not had any mechanical issue with the car and since I purchased it I have done a slew of things to it including oil change, coolant flush and brakes. Plugs were changed around 200 miles ago to fresh stock plugs and gapped down. All service done at either BBI Autosport or Cobb Tuning So Cal. This car has never been raced while I owned it, never seen a track. I rarely drove it and it sat in doors with a car cover over it. Now, as the car sits it makes 580WHP and about 580ft/lbs of torque to the wheels. It is tuned way down as not to be aggressive on the rods. The car has tunes for E85 and 91 Octane. This car runs as good as stock if not better. I have a lot of time in the tune on this car so I can say it would be hard to find a better running car. This is also the perfect setup for someone who wants to do a 997 Turbo with bigger turbos, as this car has literally everything that would be needed to do bigger turbos minus the turbos and the lines. These are the modifications done to the car as of right now: Engine: GMG Exhaust with High Flow Cats Cobb Tuning 1000cc Injectors Cobb Tuning Accessport with various different calibrations OS Giken Twin Disc Clutch Suspension: Eibach Lowering Springs Stock wheels and tires are brand new! Please email me if you are interested in the car. DO NOT PM! There is a group of people that will get the PM's notification and this is a sale of my personal car not Cobb as a company. POST 3Original post

These cars are well known for gearbox whine. Is he sure it's not just that? Tire wear I'm guessing is probably related to the inner edge wearing faster than the outer edge, which is perfectly normal. This is due to the performance alignment the cars have and is common to all 911 models. If you change the alignment so the tires wear evenly you decrease the handling abilities.

POST 4Original post

Nice vehicle. Does it have AZ or CA title/registration?

POST 5Original post

Agree strongly with above poster Teflon but would add it could also be a rear wheel bearing and the sound being left behind at a faster speed. My best guess is check the inside edge of the rear tires.

POST 7Original post

I would also say gear box whine. On tire wear, yes the inner edge will in fact wear, you normally will go through 2 sets of rears for every 1 of fronts. Now, that being said, Porsche recommends 2* toe out, if you go to a neutral toe you'll get better wear, but..your car will lose some handeling ability, but if you're just street driving, even spiritedly, you should be ok.

POST 13Original post

Thanks guys! JB was taking his time to help me out and i highly appreciate it. The car is actually a Carrera 4 - not sure that makes any difference to the question. I think it is very possible I am being hyper-sensitive. I am a PCA member - joined when I bought my first one. Once weather dries up a bit I will unbox her and see what I can find out on the road. Does anyone have a spare owner's manual by any chance? A few of my questions would be easily answered there. Also, isn't there a Porsche site with the tech manuals online? Thanks again - big thanks to JB. Happy holidays!

I had a VERY similar issue with my 996 when i first bought it. Put on some brand new Michelin Pilot Super Sports and its now quite and all the odd road noises went away.

POST 27Original post

my guess is that it is tire noise. check the edges for wear differences and what they call "feathering".

POST 28Original post

Quotes source post: 4438343

Quote: i was merely pointing out a statement of fact, and while I'm familiar with the term, i'm not sure where you got the "hate" from? it was more of a bemused disdain, if you must know car was sold a couple months ago, and now with more miles and now at an indie dealer and the price went up by nearly 5k?! and my mention of that is hating? lol. need to re-learn your hip hop speak... and the last thing i'd want to have for you is "attractive qualities", but sure. i'll take it under advisement. ahh, no i won't actually

POST 29Original post

Quote: Inside of rears are worn but smooth - I see or feel no feathering or cupping. Front tires are pretty new and look fine. We are driving it as much as weather allows and will take it in for 60k service in a few weeks and have them check it but dealer says pretty much same as you guys. I have been on some other lists but this has to be the best one. You guys are great! Thanks. --Joe

POST 31Original post

Okey Dokey, Now if it's tire noise, go with Sumie's or Kumho, goood value and good tires. Have your alingment checked as well, Porsche recommends 2* toe OUT on the rears, go to nutral if you can.

POST 33Original post

I put Kanook on mine for under $800 four months ago. We got a $80 rebate on a credit card from them about 3 months afterwards. The cash topped the car up with gas a couple of times. The new tires made an amazing improvement on the road noise from the old worn ones.

POST 35Original post

Yes, rear tires wear fast. 10-12k on a set. Inside edges wear fast. You may want to get adjustable toe control arms to get proper alignment. Post your questions here, AFTER doing a search JB in NJ.

POST 36Original post

I like the new michelin supervsports. Hear they last longer then pilotvsports. Put them on my rears and we'll see how long. Hoping at least 15k with no performance difference. Also 100 less per tire.
