using "Bleche-White" on the white lettering (on a Jeep or American-made car anyway).

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I've got an 08
Boxster
in black with 18" factory lobster wheels. I'm not a huge fan of the wheels, but right now can't afford to buy different ones. So I was thinking about either powder coating or Plasti-dipping the ones I have black. But I'm just not sure if I like black rims on a black car. So I'd like to hear some of your opinions.
I was able to find a black
Cayman
with before and after photos. Hopefully it will provide enough of an example.
Black on black looks mean. If you are going for elegant, go silver or gray. You want bada$$, go black. I think I'm going to get black wheels this spring for my red car.
I guess I'm the only one, but Black wheels remind me too much of winter steelies in the Northeast. Harder for the design to "pop" also....
But either options will look good!
Do Plastidip in black and see if you like it. It will cost $30, and take 3 hours of your time. If you do like it, then you can get either keep it, or peel it and get them powdercoated.
I voted in the above poll for silver (Factory), but according to the photo example you've provided, I'd definitely have to say that the black looks considerably better.
The "MURDERED-OUT" (all black) look is popular these days, Perhaps I am old-school, but I enjoy polishing up my wheels and making them "POP".
You really cant make out the design of the wheel when it is all blacked-out. To me it looks boring and monochrome. Some people think the
Cayman S
5-spoke design is boring too, but I LOVE them! I guess I am old-school that way. I woulndn't mind at all having a set of "Lobster-Forks" either.
If I am going to spend big bucks on a set of custom wheels, I want people to see them!
On my Jeep, the guys at the tire shop were shocked that I wanted the white lettering on my
tires
on the outside. I like the satisfaction of detailing the wheels/
tires
using "Bleche-White" on the white lettering (on a Jeep or American-made car anyway).
Here is my 2006 Cayman S with the 5-spoke design. Pardon the "cold-sweat" dripping off of her...
I dipped the wheels on my G37 flat black - looked awesome for a few months but the matte, rubbery finish grabs all the brake dust and cannot be washed off very easily. I eventually put a fresh coat on plus the clear coat for protection but that discolored after another year or so. I eventually took it off - horrible process on multi-spoke wheels, it only peels off of large surfaces while still relatively fresh.
Based on my experience, I would never dip
Porsche
wheels - powder coat only.
HTH,
Tom
I voted for silver but only because there is not an option for what I would do, which is have the wheels painted a medium silver or gunmetal. I'm so over black wheels it is not even funny. They provide no contrast to the vehicle. If you are more than a few feet away you lose any perception of the shape and styling of the wheel.
As for PlastiDip - I have used this product on the wheels of our Jeep Wrangler. It is a good product for that use as the finished product has a bit of rough texture to it which fits the 'offroad' persona of a Wrangler. I would not use PlastiDip on the wheels of a sports car. Also, the advantage of being able to 'peel off' PlastiDip goes away the longer it is on the wheel as the material becomes somewhat brittle.
my .02
I have both now, the regular OEM wheels in
Porsche
silver and the SV-104's in a powder coated, very dark copper color that appear black chrome. At first, a month ago, I wished they were a little lighter to show off the wheel style vs the Black on Black car. Now, after a few weeks of using them, which I should take off as they are my race
tires
, I like the suttle chrome glint they give off and they accent the brakes, which silver does a poor job. Check out Ferrari 458 black on black with black wheels and yellow wheel crests on Google, excellant contrast in the yellow brake calipers/carbon disc's that usually go with the yellow Ferrari side crest. The black wheels flow with the car, not detract or call your eye attention to less important features than the style design of the car.
if you like dark wheels, consider dark grey/gunmetal colours.
black is really hard to keep clean!
the lobsters are also different as they have a large surface area - so if you paint them black its a large black surface unlike those designs with thin spokes.
the version with silver ring looks nicer (ajoyndyh's pic).
I kept mine silver as my car is already grey and the silver colour stands out more with the red callipers
there are plenty of examples of interesting lobsters such as these I found.
mine are a bit more basic here...

Original
Porsche
lobster forks came in 19" only. I have 18" replicas which I use as my dedicated winter wheels. The 18" replicas were quite popular it seems. Mine were made in Italy and so far have been serving me very well (2nd winter). The silver color of the replicas is lighter than the OEM which is more grey, less silver. Here is a photo of my car with winter shoes on:
