Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

My co-pilot on the drive home opined that the clicking when the phone was not ringing was caused by the phone "checking in" with a nearby cell site.
Leading evidence: 'phone "checking in"' (1 discussions report identifying this cause; no attributable repair resolution). Across 1 matching discussions, the most frequently mentioned possible cause is 'phone "checking in"' (1 discussions; 1 report identifying it and 0 suggest it). The most frequently discussed action is 'Check ' in' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

I spoke to Jamie at Paris Audio and he reports that the buzzing in my radio is caused by the phone antenna.

Suggestion
You are correct in that the intermittents were the cellphone 'checking' in.

In Europe we use digital (GSM) phones so we get that all the time, they will even fire off the radar detector.

I did not realize you were going to use an external antenna; rather just an in car mount with handsfree.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I took delivery of my 2002 996TT X50 yesterday, then drove from Redwood City to Los Angeles. I didn't get to sleep until 3:00 am, so I'm a bit tired and lacking the energy to post a full report with the 36 photos I took. Suffice it to say that I am awestruck -- I'll explain more later. I have posted a couple of photos below. The mods begin today and it will look substantially different by the weekend.
Quick question: My Motorola V60 cell phone caused an intermittent clicking sound in the stereo when the phone was stored near the stereo. The clicking would appear whenever the phone rang, and intermittently when the phone was not ringing. My co-pilot on the drive home opined that the clicking when the phone was not ringing was caused by the phone "checking in" with a nearby cell site. The clicking stopped if I moved the phone away from the stereo. Has anyone else experienced this? Can it be remedied? I had intended to install a hands freee kit on Tuesday, but only if I can remedy the clicking. TIA.
Craig (L.A.)
What you are experiencing is a radiated immunity problem; i.e. the transmitted RF energy from your cellphone is coupling into the wiring harness in the car and being (rectified) and output on the speakers. Digital cellphones are worse for this than old analog ones. You are correct in that the intermittents were the cellphone 'checking' in. BTW, household devices (i.e. clock radios, stereos, etc) have this same problem, try it. If you place your cellphone next to a stereo receiver, you will hear speaker clicks and pops a few seconds before your cellphone rings (this is how those little bolt on antennas with lights built in light up to let you know you have an incoming cell call).
The only practical fix is locate the cellphone away from the headunit and wiring harnesses, someplace in the car near the console should work better. Good luck.
I spoke to Jamie at Paris Audio and he reports that the buzzing in my radio is caused by the phone antenna. Therefore, because the V60 hands free kit (scheduled for installation on Tues) includes a remote antenna, Jamie assured me that the buzzing will not occur when the phone is in the kit.
Does that sound right to you ltc?

In Europe we use digital (GSM) phones so we get that all the time, they will even fire off the radar detector. Its exactly what Itc said. Get a hands free kit installed. with an outside antena.
Craig,
What Paris Audio told you is correct. I did not realize you were going to use an external antenna; rather just an in car mount with handsfree.
Using a properly mounted external antenna with shielded wiring (fairly standard) should eliminate the problem.
This kind of topic is one that I am often forced to solve with car manufacturers, as I work for Bose and designed the DSP amplifier for all Porsche models 986,996 and Cayenne (E1). My same design is in the Audi A8 and Mercedes S Class and the Maybach as well and issues like this are usually the hardest to solve in an OEM design.
Electronic compatability is becoming more of an issue as we put more and more electronics into the car. FYI, the MY03 Porsches have a fiber optic bus connecting the headunit to the nav to the amplifier to the phone, etc! Throw in a DVD player, surround sound processor, satellite phone, etc and cars are becoming more electronic than mechanical.
Hope you enjoy your new car, it is beautiful.
