So I know that this has been done with some success and other have stalled a bit, but I though I would start a thread on my build.
First off the car in question is a retired Grand-AM ST 05 Boxster S that we race 2011-13. It was converted to non S trim to comply with the rules at the time. Essentially we were allowed to run all of the S parts except the S motor. So starting with the S made sense. The car was updated to 2009 2.9L spec in 2014 with parts from a Cayman that we were building to replace it. We did a couple of races in IMSA and then raced in Pirelli World Challenge in 2015. Than the car got stripped down to just about nothing and the parts went back on the Cayman and we sold that at the end of 15. So I was left with a pretty bare chassis and the old 2.7 motor went into another project and a replacement 3.2 was way more than I wanted to spend for the performance it would deliver. So Car got pushed into a corner of the shop and has been unloved since
Yes these are all the same car!
Then I started reading about this Audi 4.2l V8 and it just seemed to make sense to me. I cruised the auctions and found a 02 S8 that had been driven into a pole at a high rate of speed. The hit was right on the headlight and drove the wheel back into the door. Result was the car was done but the motor was good. 120k miles and what looks like a well taken care of car. For $300 plus auction fees, about $650 total I couldn't resist!
The Boxster got dusted off and we are cleaning it up. Motor came out of the Audi and an old spare P trans came down out of the rafters. The two bolt together nicely and I'm waiting on a left motor mount to do the first test fit. I don't have a clutch for it yet and am looking at a few solutions. A custom steel flywheel and S6 clutch is looking good and not much more that the 034 racing flywheel/flex plate deal. there are a ton of details to work out but the pieces are coming together.
So the plan going forward is to make a composite hood and mount the rad in the front trunk, use a Mazda 3 power steering pump with the Porsche rack, S8 front brakes and Boxster S front brakes on the rear with a stand alone Tevis ABS system, Aim dash and data logger, fiberglass top.
Planning on racing it in a class where a minimum ware rating for tires is 180 so the suspension needs to be compliant. So relatively soft springs to start with and Bilstein PSS9 shocks. Also this is what I have...
Very cool - do you anticipate any oil control or oil temp issues on a track with the Audi motor? If so how will you address?
thx
Hadn’t gotten that far yet. Thinking a accusump might be isedwas planning on a remote filter mount so plumbing in the accusump should be easy
Glad to see your project! I'm looking forward to seeing how your trial fit goes, and how you redo the upper engine enclosure.
You probably know this, but the flywheel on the Audi has the timing notches for the crank position sensor. So unless you use another triggering setup, any custom flywheel would need to include them.
Good luck!

Thanks. Ive talked to Kent a couple of time already. His is a 986 chassis and the earlier motor but a lot transfers over. Not sure I want to make the Motec investment that he has also. I'm guessing he has close to $$20k there alone!
Got some work done today. Motor test fit went well and only needed minor trimming to fit mostly at the rear. Used a tiedown Strap to bend the front cover edge back some. I had to cut off both rear cover mounting tabs. Planning on padding the top of the motor and making a fiberglass mold of the motor housing then I can make a carbon cover from that. Subframe is coming together an is sort of cobbled one tube at s time. Left side done but right needs to go around the pan so posses a bigger chalange. Started on that and the tube kinked so I quit for the night.
Also got the Tevis ABS fitted but not wired.
Rad came in also so will be working on that soon.
