Reported cause
The problem is once they are apart you may have to replace syncro's/ bearings/ sliders etc.
Leading evidence: 'once they are apart you may have' (1 discussions report identifying this cause; no attributable repair resolution). Across 1 matching discussions, the most frequently mentioned possible cause is 'once they are apart you may have' (1 discussions; 1 report identifying it and 0 suggest it). The most frequently discussed action is 'Repair /rebuild ( unknown condition, thorn in' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

Being that you have a 944 S gearbox they use smaller teeth on the crownwheel and pinion compared the the 944 S2 gearbox which will be stronger in this area.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Hi all,
A shot in the dark, but.....
Any tips for prep/mods for a 944 gearbox for Tarmac rally?
The gearbox in the 944S needs a repair/rebuild ( unknown condition, thorn in with car for nil).
It will get a LSD of some description (Quaife ATB most likely, but advice welcome)
Cheers
Greg
Hi Greg,
Here is a write up i did for rennlist on how to rebuild a 944 gearbox, We have done plenty at work.
http://forums.rennlist.com/rennforums/944-turbo-and-turbo-s-forum/686949-944-transmission-walkthrough-image-heavy.html
The gearboxes are reasonably tough but like any other porsche they dont cope very well with hard launches or burnouts. Common problems are crownwheel and pinion breaking. Being that you have a 944 S gearbox they use smaller teeth on the crownwheel and pinion compared the the 944 S2 gearbox which will be stronger in this area.
My personal preference for track work or tarmac is a clutch plate LSD. such as the ones Guard transmission (USA) and modena engineering(AUS) manufacture. a 40/60 would work very well. If i were to be making a car just for motokhana work then i would consider the Quafe ATB. Reason being is that all ATB only lockup on power, under braking you basically have an open diff. An open diff is fine if you want to rotate the car quickly but you will have much more control with a clutch plate LSD.

Sean,
Nice write up, I will admit, that with the tooling and my experience that it is a job I will be sending to some experts.
So, no real mods as such? For some of our rally gearboxes in the past we have used double roll pins in shift forks (Datsun boxes), deeper circlips etc...
With a mildly modified 2.5 16v (normal things: breathing, compression and management (open to suggestions)), burnouts and 'hard' launches are not really going to be a real issue. My aim is light weight, handling and reliability.
May I ask what a LSD costs and a rough cost on a gearbox rebuild costs?
Any information on alternate cams for a 944S?
Cheers
Greg
Hi Greg,
There is no need for those mods such as the circlips and extra roll pins. they are strong in those areas.
webcamshafts do make alternate cam profiles for the 944 16v engine. Saying that you would probably get more benefit finding a 3.0ltr bottom end and getting the extra torque associated with the increase capacity. Not saying a peaky camshaft wont help top end but at the sacrifice of bottom end performance. Also RS barn make camshafts for 968's so does a guy in the states by the name of michael Mount.
I believe the last time we bought some Guard transmission LSD's the price was around $2200 plus shipping. Modena are a bit more expensive at over 3K and you have to wait for a batch to be made. Strength wise they are equal. The GT LSD does give you 2 ramp rates on the one unit which is nice. you just have to open it up and turn the ramps around. dont quote me but it may give you a 40/60 and a 50/80 etc.
Cost on box rebuild is difficult because it depends on what it needs. just installing LSD as little as 6 hours. up to minimum 12 hrs minimum for the works. The problem is once they are apart you may have to replace syncro's/ bearings/ sliders etc. you just dont know what you will find until you are in there.
I would advice to consider using a S2 crownwheel and pinion as they are the same low ratio but they are stronger.

Sean,
Hi there, my read of the Tarmac rally rules indicates that a 3lt swap (or 3lt crank into 2.5 for 2.8lt) is verboten. Happy to be wrong, especially when I know where a S2 engine is for $1500.
Roger the reluctance on giving a price, I imagine the 'box I have will be full synchro and bearing replacement plus adding a LSD. Ball park figure? $1k , $2k, $5k.....$10k? I have no idea. It is for budgeting purposes only.
I am new to the Porsche world (in terms of ownership and paying the bills).
Cheers
