Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Does anyone know if there is any direct correlation between the two? My '99 C4 does not seem to comsume ANY oil between services (maybe 1 litre per 8k miles). I had bought it used a few months back. Does this mean the previous owner ran the engine in with kid gloves, thereby ensuring all seals & joints bedded in perfectly? What oil consumption does everyone else get?

POST 2Original post

I had a '99 cab that was a daily driver and I didn't need to add oil between regular maintenance until 41k miles.

POST 3Original post

Well, my 1999 does not consume oil, but it sure does leak it.....

POST 4Original post

I don't know about the water cooled motors, but there is apparently wide variation in oil consumption among the later (last ten years) air sucking models. Some owners have reported less than a quart (or liter) added between oil changes, while others have reported adding as much as a quart every 1000 miles or so. What seems interesting is that several have reported that their oil consumption has remained fairly steady from very early on. In other words, some apparently healthy engines naturally use more oil than other apparently healthy engines from the very start. I don't remember anyone reporting as little as 1 quart or liter per 8k miles, however. So I would definitely consider that level of consumption (or non-consumption) to be at one extreme. I don't think that means that the low consumption was necessarily caused by the previous owner doing everything perfectly, however. I've even heard someone argue that healthy engines are supposed to use some oil. As engines age and wear, they will use more oil, of course, and excessive oil usage is often a cue for engine work. For the old air suckers, I think Porsche said 1 quart per 800 miles would not necessarily be considered excessive, but if one had at one time been going 1600 miles per quart, the higher consumption may indicate up-coming engine work.

POST 5Original post

I have a friend with a 1995 928GTS 5 speed that he purchased new, it now has 16K miles and goes through a quart every 400 miles!! Thats right four hundred. Porsche sent technicians over to inspect car, sealed engine with super secret whatever(so no oil could be taken out or added) to test it and sent him to drive. Low and behold, down a full quart after 400 miles. Not leaking, consuming. I believe Porsche changed their consumption allowance because of this 928....

POST 6Original post

On the 993, factory spec. on oil consumption is 1 qt. per 620 miles (1,000 km). I have no idea what the 996 spec. is.

POST 7Original post

About the only time I do add oil is when I go to track-add about 3 cap fulls for the day just for safe purposes. Other then that haven't noticed any loss of oil other then first TSB for RMS. Regards. Mike

POST 9Original post

Christer- The factory does not describe the figure as a "recommended" maximum oil consumption. Porsche simply states the consumption of 1qt./600 miles as spec. Porsche is very careful not to state ranges of oil consumption. I believe the factory takes this position because a tight band on oil consumption (between healthy engines) does not exist. Oil consumption figures are all over the place. Therefore, from the factory's perspective, an engine is with in their specification's (and healthy, therefore) if it consumes 1 qt. / 600 miles. I became intimately involved in these numbers with the factory as my car initially used (in my mind-not thiers) alot of oil.

POST 10Original post

FWIW, My 2000 C4 uses essentially no oil between changes. It has 34,000 miles on it. For that matter my '89 928 GT also does not consume oil between changes and it has 92,000 miles on it. Both vehicles use mobil 1 and get a change every 5000 miles.
