Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Suggestion

I have found that it doesn't seem to make a very big difference whether the car is hot or not, but I try to check when warm (after I get home I go out to the garage 10-20 minutes later and then check).

There are rumors that the next 996 (997?) will use the 993 based block again with true dry sump.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I have a 2002 911. The manual suggests measuring oil a few minutes after re-fueling, in order to allow for the oil to leave the engine. My dealer suggests measuring the oil every morning before starting the car. But this goes against the manual's suggestion that the measurement should be taken when the engine is at operating temperature. OTOH, I tend to think the reading in the morning should be more accurate as the engine is a dry sump engine. I get wildly different readings depending on when I take the measurement. Any suggestions?

POST 2Original post

Always check your oil in the same spot, as any small incline (fore-aft or side-side) will make a big difference to the reading. If your garage is level, that's the easist place. I have found that it doesn't seem to make a very big difference whether the car is hot or not, but I try to check when warm (after I get home I go out to the garage 10-20 minutes later and then check). Also, add oil very conservatively - a little make a big vhange on the gauge. It's easy to add more but hard to remove Also, unfortuately our cars don't really have dry sumps. They call it "integrated" dry sump, but this is just a variation on the oil pan theme. The only 996's that have true dry sumps are the GT3, TT, and GT2 (all based on the 993 engine block). While our 02s are somewhat improved from the first 996s they still have oiling difficulties if you exceed 1.4g for over a few minutes (i.e. it can only do one lap of the Nurburgring at full speed on track tires before oiling problems). There are rumors that the next 996 (997?) will use the 993 based block again with true dry sump.

POST 3Original post

I try to measure oil level when the engine is warm in my garage, as the manual says and is generally accepted practice. The 996 is the first car I've had with a electronic oil level meter. I try it frequently but it does not seem to be accurate. It shows only 1 bar over minimum when the oil stick shows half way. Anyone else experience this. This may have been discussed before but I'm new and just felt like asking.

POST 4Original post

Hot or cold really doesn't matter. What matters is that the car is level and all the oil has drained down. The most consistent reading for me have been in the morning in the garage before start-up. If you insist on a hot reading, do it after a long or hard drive, but wait a good 30-40 minutes to let all the oil drain down. Depending on that electonic countdown after gassing up leads to widely fluctuating readings.

POST 5Original post

If you think you have a level garage floor put a level on it and you may be surprised. I was. Whoever built the house put a pitch in the garage to the water would drain out when he washed it with a hose??? I have to back up onto 3 house shingles under each tire in order to get it level.(how's that for being ****) Can't rely on the interior guage. Personally I don't think it's any better than the older Pcar oil "level" guages.
