Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

If I play around with the AC or lights while the car is running it changes the tone of the noise.

Don...no the car had to be running for me to hear it.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I just had four new Bridgestone S03 Pole position tires put on my car and a four wheel alignment. When I got the car home I noticed a high pitched whine coming from the front of the car behind the wheels and brakes. At first I thought one of the tires was leaking so I immediately took it back to the tire store. Turns out when I got it back there and turned the car off the noise stops. One of the mechanics got under and we turned the car back on and the noise started again. The noise comes from a covered area under the front trunk. These guys don't know Porsches real well so they had no idea what it was. It is like a whine...sounds like a pump or something. Anyone know what it could possibly be? The car is a 99 996 Cab Tiptronic.
While it is hard to tell from the sound describe. If you turned your car off and you heard a sound that sounded like a brake noise. Did you have your AC on? The sound you may have heard was air in the evaporator. I started to get some of those noises they took out all the coolant and put it back in, Then made sure the AC system was up to snuff.
Actually very strange that you noticed that same sound after putting on a set of pole positions....It happned to me the same day I had my SO-3 put on too...very weird...(BUt the problem is not the tires..!!)
On a side note ...these SO-3 seem to be very good in the turns....BUT SUCK UNDER HARD BRAKE!!! Be carefull ....they won't stop as well as the original tires...I was very very surprised.
Update: Just got back from the dealership. They put it up on the lift and they tell me the noise is the fuel pump. They are going to replace under warranty. I asked the mechanic if it is cool to drive the car and he said no problem. He said he has never seen one go bad and leave anyone stranded...if anything they just start to make noise. :-)
I saw your post that the fuel pump was making the noise. Did the noise also occur when you turned the key on but didn't engage the starter?
Just curious. I had a 964 with a noisy fuel pump and you could hear it with the key on w/o the engine being started. Sounded like one of those after market pre start oil circulation pumps.
I had a weird noise coming from the front right side of the car at SLOW turns. Turns out therers a TSB on this ... a front strut problem! I guess it loosens up!! They tightened it and it went away!!!
Don...no the car had to be running for me to hear it. If I play around with the AC or lights while the car is running it changes the tone of the noise. Just glad I know what iT is now. It was really freaking me out...:-)
