Having now run my 981 GT4 on MPS4Ss for almost 18 months, and they are not N rated as when I bought them in April last year the N rated rears were not available, I can quite honestly say the tyres have been fantastic in all weather conditions.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

What i have learned reading on here is that the warranty agreements that cover you post the initial manufacturers warranty are “fussy”. As there are no N rated Mps4s in the correct rear size them you risk not being covered.
All madness. Everyone tells me that p zeros are rubbish.
And Porsche if course does specify a winter tyre.
I would speak to your dealer.l and follow their advice.
However i hear the 4s is awesome in the wet and UK at least cold.
I will be fitting them to my winter wheels this Summer when the Cuos go back on.
Snowy
If you have just purchased it you will not have to worry for another 2 years so put on there whatever you fancy. I plumped for 4s`s as they are almost as grippy as a cup tyre with more tread and also work better in the cold and damp.
Check your extended warranty wording carefully and go from there.
You'll need N-rated tyres to pass a 111-point check to renew the warranty, but you'll need to check what happens if you have non-Porsche approved parts fitted to your current warranty.

What's pathetic is you hanging around in here constantly moaning about hard done to you were. We've heard it a million times, get over it and move on.

So here's a scenario. You're abroad and end up with a puncture in some remote place. After searching around the only tyre you can get is a non N-rated type of the correct size etc.. So does that invalidate the warranty?

I don't know if it invalidates the warranty, that's why I said you need to check the wording in your own policy. It may, and probably will, change over time.
I agree MP4Ss are awesome, we have them on our mk3 Focus RS. Fabulous, even in the current weather.
How are tyres going to void cars warranty?
If you crash your car it's down to insurance. Same tyres on each axle covers that. The only thing the N does is put fifty quid extra on each tyre.

If the Porsche extended warranty states that any non-Porsche parts invalidate the entire policy, that's how. Like I said, you'd need to check the policy wording on your paperwork.
The initial three year factory warranty is different.

Not necessarily.
1. 305/30/20 PS4S N rated - £229.35
2. 305/30/20 PS4S none N rated - £224.90
3. 245/35/20 PS4S N rated - £168.90
4. 245/35/20 PS4S none N rated - £162.95

I agree, the N rating doesn’t add anything at all.
It’s crazy that Michelin make N rated in 305 but not 295.

Chaps,
I'm looking for your help please. I've bought a 981 GT4 and it has the correct N1 Cup 2s on it and they have 5mm tread all round. What other tyres are people using as I want to keep the Cup 2s but wouldn't mind using Michelin Pilot Sport 4Ss on the car. I know you can get N0 fronts but not the rears. Will there be any detrimental effect if I were to use non N0 rear MPS4Ss?
I know that Pirelli have a N0 PZero but not sure what they're like compared to the MPS4Ss.
It is an approved used OPC car and has 24 months warranty.
Thanks,
Andy

Err, nope. Using rear tyres for the 981 GT4 and figures from blackcircles.com as an example:
245/35/20 Cup2 N1 rated - £246.98
245/35/20 Cup2 none N rated - £254.72

Well, what's the figure for the 305s clever clogs lololo

£10 or so...? Hardly significant surely. Camskill £295 N1 vs M0/K2 etc. And given the subject title is about the gt4 305s are irrelevant.
Yep, there was no non-rated 295 on blackcircles, so I'm not sure if there is one. As isaldiri says, there's a Merc rated and Porsche rated and they're £278.99 (N1, Porsche) versus £287.88 (M0, Merc). The older N0 is £311.36.

The OP wanted to know would there be a difference in using non rated tyres, so does not matter what tyre size.

£10 for a near £300 tyre is not substantial.
We had a speaker from Pirelli for a PCGB meeting and the subject of N rated and non N rated came up as expected, we were told that although the tread pattern may look the same the construction of the tyres is different, if you buy a Porsche rated tyre against a Ferrari rated tyre etc the construction will be different.
The fact that they look the same does not mean they are the same and the operating characteristics can be very different.
At least that is what we were told.

Did you ask why his tyres were so s
t vs all the other brands !
The issue with N spec is they are made for a car yes, but then an OPC will fit a CGT front tyre to the rear of a Cayman and say it’s ok as it’s N spec. So A: Pirelli are a crap tyre and B: N spec is a joke when your OPC has no clue.
I hate the N spec b
ks and the battery b
ks and OPC high prices of both.

As a Chassis engineer I can confirm this is absolutely true.
Sometimes the difference between the N rated tyre and the non rated tyre is visible, like for example the N0 MPS4S for the 718 which has quite different rim protection and indeed sits less stretched on the wheel than the generic non N version.
Pirelli used to do a demo where they brought along four examples of the same tyre, each for a different manufacturer, but the tyres were cut open and they had quite different construction internally, different number of plies, different beading etc.
Apologies for picking this up again.
I did speak with the Sales manager of Porsche Cambridge which is my nearest OPC and who will be servicing the car, I didn't buy the car from them, however, he did say that unless a warranty claim can be directly attributable to the MPS4Ss, which he did say would probably be unlikely, then he would be happy for a customer to run them on a GT4 as he knows they are a very good tyre and there are not that many N rated more road focused tyres on the market apart from the Pirellis, which as he admitted are not as good as the MPS4Ss.
Please note I am keeping the Cup 2s as they do have almost 5mm of tread on them and can be put back on the car at any time.

Worth a watch to see what difference there can be between a standard MPs 4S and a brand specific MPS 4s

sure, but who finds themselves driving in those conditions he is testing it in!
I would most definitely like to fit MPS4S on my GT4, as they are fabulous in all conditions (or certainly were on all of my previous sports cars).
As for the Cup 2s, they were the reason there is one less GT4 in this world as I hit standing water on a motorway and wrote the car off.
Having bought a replacement 981 GT4 I am now terrified of wet roads and would be so much more comfortable on the Michelins.
I was always a Michelin fanboy. Had PS2N2 on my 987.2, and was delighted to find my GTS4.0 has PS4SN0 on when it was delivered. Replaced with the same. Believed them to be the very best.
The michelins lost grip suddenly on a slight bend at 55mph on wet road, 11º ambient and despite PSM ended up in a ditch / hedge.
The replacement 718S (courtesy of Locktons) was shod with Pirelli P Zero (PZ4) N1 and during 1500 miles of hard use in Scottish Border roads, in some truly appalling weather, did not put a foot wrong. Excellent tyres if rather noise than the PS4S.
My preconceptions have been well and truly shaken.

Wow, sounds horrible. Do you think there were other factors at play, oil, diesel, mud? Seems really odd that they let you down like that and it’s a horrible feeling when it goes wrong in that fashion. Glad you’re ok and in another car.

No obvious surface contamination. The road surface was quite worn in parts. But my friend had driven up and down the same road earlier, same conditions a mark 1 MX5 at considerable higher speed.
My tyres were fairly new, had done only 400 miles and were not fully warmed up having only done 6 miles that afternoon.
Interesting I spoke with a very experienced professional accident investigator, and one of his first questions after hearing the story, was "Were you on Michelins?"
Sadly not in another car, the 718S was just a temporary hire car and goes back tomorrow.

@Bincenzo, in your case I would definitely put MPS4Ss on your car and N0 rated are now available and they are listed on Blackcircles, as I've just checked. They will definitely give you back the confidence you say you've lost in the wet.
If N0 rated MPS4S tyres would have been available in April last year I would have obviously bought them but even after speaking with Michelin themselves I was told at the time they didn't know when 295 30 R20 would be available. They then started making them shortly after I bought the non N rated tyres, however, supply was a bit sketchy at first, but now it looks like they are readily available.
