Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.
Discussions that report identifying a cause

0 original-poster resolution reports. Counts can overlap; they are not unique people or a success rate.
0 discussions have direct query context; 0 report a fix in that context. Other evidence may inherit the discussion’s subject.
Reported cause
I had loud squeaks from my suspension which turned out to be from the sway bar endlink joints.
Leading evidence: 'from the sway bar endlink joints' (1 discussions report identifying this cause; no attributable repair resolution). Across 1 matching discussions, the most frequently mentioned possible cause is 'from the sway bar endlink joints' (1 discussions; 1 report identifying it and 0 suggest it). The most frequently discussed action is 'Lubricate joints' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

Your suspension squeaking is most likely a bushing issue, as mentioned above.

Suggestion
Lubricating the joints cured the squeaks, but in the absense of the squeaks, a clunking noise surfaced.

Suggestion
It turned out that the friction had already worn out the joints and I had to replace the endlinks.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

At low speeds (windows up or down), I can hear my suspension creaking slightly. This only started a couple of weeks ago. I THINK it's the suspension, but I could be wrong.
I've got a '99 996 C4 with 54k miles on the clock. I can't tell whether the sound originates from the front or the back of the car.
Also, there's a slight rattling coming from the engine, again only noticeable at very low speeds. No other side-effects though, i.e. no discernible loss in performance / oil consumption etc.
All advice appreciated before I take it into the dealer for a diagnosis.
Hi Jason:
In addition to Scott's suggestion above, I'd also mention that the factory rubber swaybar bushings are also prone to squeak.
If the swaybars bushings are indeed the culprit, you can confirm this by spraying them with something like Wurth HHS. This can permanently dealt with a good rubber lube.

Nope, standard non-sports suspension. Worn bushes could be the problem, I suppose, as the car has done 54k miles.
The car hasn't been modified at all.

Lubricating the joints cured the squeaks, but in the absense of the squeaks, a clunking noise surfaced. It turned out that the friction had already worn out the joints and I had to replace the endlinks.
So I'd advice that, if you cure the problem with lube, get the part you lubed checked out in case the friction had worn it out.
We have a customer car here at the dealership, its an early 99, that is on its third drivers side muffler. The first two both had bad baffles inside and caused an engine rattle sound. Your suspension squeaking is most likely a bushing issue, as mentioned above. Good Luck
Thanks for all the responses guys!
At least I'll know which way to point the usually clueless service personnel.
If anyone else has any further ideas or solutions, please feel free to contribute.

Forgive my ignorance, but are these 'baffles' in the exhaust system - is so, where exactly?
