This past Sunday my car developed a new squeal. It sounded like a belt or a pulley was going bad. The car makes the sound whether moving or still, clutch engaged or not. The noise quiets down if I'm accelerating or reving the motor over 5000. It usually takes about 10-15 minutes to start making the squeal.
So this morning I brought it to the dealer. They said that the noise was coming from the bell housing and that they had to drop the transmission to know anything else. $1300 for a diagnostic step to know what the noise is before anything is fixed! I'm now at 52,800 miles and into an extended bumper to bumper warranty. The best part is that if they drop the transmission and figure out that its an issue with the water pump, I'm out of pocket for the transmission. If its something in the transmission under warranty meaning that it needed to be removed anyway, I'll be reimbursed. Anyway, being told to spend $1300 before having any idea what the problem is is not acceptable.
I picked up the car and brought it to the race shop that installed my quaife TBD. It won't take them nearly as long to figure out the issue and their rates are lower. The service from my dealer and this extended warranty is a joke.
If I get frisky I might put a LWF or sturdier clutch in while the transmission is out.
If you drive it until it is apparent what the problem is, will it all be covered by the extended warranty?
What extended warranty do you have? Through what company? What does the coverage actually state in the terms and conditions?
If your car were under the standard Porsche factory warranty, what would be going on then for diagnostics? Included or not?
I have to got through my docs to figure out the name of the extended warranty company. My understanding for the service manager is that it would be this way no matter which warranty I am under. It probably would not cost me anything if I drove it until it broke.
Turns out its the oil separator. My performance shop figured it out without having to remove the transmission, charge me $1300, or spend two days doing it. The part is around $60. I'm quite frustrated with the service department at my dealer. This almost seems fraudulent.
Had my 2010 Cayman S with 3,000 miles in for a whistle sound. Only happens when the car is in idle. They replaced the oil separator. Picked her up today. The whistle is still there. Any ideas what else this could be? Taking her back in the morning. They did not hear it when the work was completed because the car has to be run for awhile and get warmed up before this noise happens.
Check the hose that goes into the oil separator. If that line kinks, it can cause the same thing. When mine went bad, I thought a belt had gone bad. If you rev the engine, it stops. Is that what it sounds like to you?
Thanks so much! That is exactly what it sounds like and it does stop when you rev up the RPMS. Will tell my service tech. Be great if that is what it is and another Porsche driver had the fix...
Check out the following picture with the oil separator on the right. You can see the two lines coming out of it. I have he Softronic Plenum, so mine looks a little different.
