adjusted hatch stops both up and down and doesnt seem to help what makes it annoying is that soemtimes it goes away and just when you start believing it is cured it comes back
Outcome qualification: Negation, uncertainty or missing explicit repair resolution overrides the raw extraction signal.

Suggestion
If it is loose (in other words, if the door when closed is a tiny bit further out than the rear body panel), then adjust the metal piece on the door housing a little bit (we're talking milimeters obviously) further in.

These are separate views of the same evidence. Frequency alone does not establish a fix, and these counts must not be added together.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Another thing suggested by the dealer (didn't work in my case...) was to make sure that the door closes flush with the body panel.
my
2006 Cayman S
has developed a noise from the rear, seems to be from inside the car
it happens most on uneven roads and seems to be worse at higher speeds, it sounds like a trim type noise rather than the thud people talk of with the hatch
really struggling to pin it down, any ideas ?
Thanks for reply
yes it does sound sort of a plastic type noise
car has had major service since noise started so if suspension I hope they would have picked it up
Does it come from behind the driver seat and is sort of a clicking noise? There have been many threads/complaints on this site about that one. My '07
Cayman
just passed 17,000 miles is no different. It will go for an hour quietly, then start, then the notorious trunk thunk. When I had the car in for a service in January, I asked the dealer to check it. Their story, "Can't hear a thing." On the 34 mile drive home the click was almost non-stop.
While there are many here who say their vehicles are noise free, there are just as many who have the same or similar noises. The long and short is, even though these cars are "precision" and expensive instruments, they put their pants on one leg at a time like us. You have to take the good with the bad.
Today was a glorious day in PA. She creaked and thunked, but, I had the window down,
sports chrono
on and she went like stink and sounded sweet.
I have the same problem recently that it is becoming more regular than before. It feels like as if you have something rattling in the rear compartment (there is one small compartment behind each seat). But both are empty.
I don't hear it on every drive... but once it goes on it stays on all through the drive!
Thanks for the help folks
I did a little experimenting today
I put a couple of boxes in the back so that the hatch had to be pressed down crushing them a little
this stopped the noise
does this suggest the problem is with the hatch ?
Will take a process of elimination. On mine there have been two sources of rear noise, both very minor. First is the rear shade, the end of the arms that pull the cloth tight hit the metallic trim piece, a piece of felt glued to the bottom of each arm cured this. The second is a trim noise from the joint of the trim pieces on the side of the hatch opening (almost straight above the shock tower) again a piece of felt tucked in between the joint cured this. I have to say my car is over two years old and still as tight as when I bought it.
There are two rubber bungs in each corner of the tailgate. They are threaded and very easy to adjust. I simply unscrewed mine approx. quarter turn to increase the contact pressure and no more rattles...
Today I removed the rear shade/curtain and the noise disappeared. I have to find out now what needs to be done to keep the shade/curtain without noise!
I have an
06 Cayman S
and had the same high pitched rattle from behind me, worse when driving over uneven roads. Turned out to be the rear hatch window brake light than had come loose. Stuck some double sided tape between it and its attachment and now I'm enjoying the blissful silence (excluding road noise and welcome engine sounds). :hilarious:
Has anyone noticed that when the privacy curtain is removed you can, in fact, hear the exhaust more clearly? Not a bad thing but it got me thinking that perhaps if one were to attach some insulating felt to one side of the curtain and reinstall it might be a way to somewhat reduce drone for those with after market droning installations. It might not completely eliminate it but it might filter it enough to be more acceptable.
tried removing blind , made no differnce
took covers of rear lights and it wasnt those
adjusted hatch stops both up and down and doesnt seem to help
what makes it annoying is that soemtimes it goes away and just when you start believing it is cured it comes back
Did you check the two compartments in the back? There is one at each side behind the seat belt
next
to the glass. Maybe you, your wife or the previous owner left something there by chance that is causing this sound?
If not, then maybe when you last serviced the car, something was left loose under the engine cover. Or that trunk's black stoppers are loose and need to be extended or replaced.
I can't think of any other possible reason.
The ends of the brace/arms that stretch the fabric actually hit the aluminum trim piece for the engine. I put small pieces of velcro on the ends of these and the noise went away.
had a drive round today with someone in passenger seat with a stick to try and press on bits if that makes sense
anyway he says it is coming from centre brakelight
anyone know how to strip this down ? could do with doing it anyway as there is some dust in it
will them reassemble with some felt ( or similar ) to try and prevent noise
I have the same issue and it's driving me absolutely crazy... One thing that helped for a while was the screwing of a little "allen" type screw in the seatbelt housing. See if the noise subsides if you press on the vertical divider between the regular window and the little triangle window in the back. If it does, then the allen will take care of the problem.
Another thing suggested by the dealer (didn't work in my case...) was to make sure that the door closes flush with the body panel. If it is loose (in other words, if the door when closed is a tiny bit further out than the rear body panel), then adjust the metal piece on the door housing a little bit (we're talking milimeters obviously) further in. YMMV...
Looking at (all?) the pertinent threads in here, I have taken down some possible causes of rear noises. Check them out, they might also help:
Hatch buffers (W615 recall)
Rubber stop at bottom corners (turn them 1/4 turn)
Plastic strut covers
Rear Hatch hinge (silicone spray?)
Bump on the trunk floor
987.512.125.02 kit including weight
Airbox
Rear quarter windows (as explained above)
Storage areas (rubber cushions on lid?)
Metal piece between windows (as explained above)
Oil Filter lid
Rear licence plate
Third Brake light (zzzz sound)
Privacy curtain (ends hitting the metal, or generally loose)
Do a little research in the forum and experiment. Oh, and if you find the solution, please let me know as well, because the noise in my car is still going strong...
Thanks for all your help everyone
well it does appear to be the centre brake light, wedged a piece of card in it and all has been quiet for 3 days
anyone know how to take the brake light apart ?
Rattle
With a hammer?
I have a small, annoying rattle that is not the brace/arms that stretch the fabric on the compartment divider (since I removed that, but will now try
shellshocked
's solution), so I'll check my center brake light. Good detective work
Rotty
!
Thanks for the reply, I have contacted the main dealer who advise that the official hammer is £575, is there a non original version I can use ? :hilarious:
Here is a link to the online parts book. The brake light assembly is page 348. It looks to be a sealed unit held on with two screws.

Same here. Rattle from the rear compartment blind, solved by placing small circular felt pieces on the plastic ends that make contact. I had another buzz/rattle that was (finally!) tracked down the casing for the rear brake light. This was solved by placing two small rubber pieces in gap on the casing.
The
Cayman
is a stiff car so I do expect the odd vibration or rattle from time to time. I can usually drown it out by driving faster (and so louder
) or turning up the
Bose
!
I notice that it also depends on the outside temperature. On recent cold mornings in the UK I noticed more vibrations as the cabin temperature warmed up.
