yesterday while stuck in ice in my driveway, i went outside the car to check the spinning tire, then i heard the ticking sound, the car was still cold & the temp. was 20f., you can hear it through the sice vents the most, this was my first time outside the car with the engine running, so i can't say if it was always there, i had an nsx before used to have a similar sound (not this loud), and it was the fuel injectors. please some input.
Here is a start to your searching. I think it is normal.

Could be a couple of things (well, or more, actually)... Could be the oil relief valve - a much documented problem, and easy warranty repair, and there still might be some faulty ones out there...or because it was right after start-up and the temperature was very cold - more likely some lifter noise. The lifters are sort of "inflated" by the engine oil and the holes the oil travels through are small, and when the oil is cold and thick, they don't inflate as fast as usual... Nothing to worry about really. Just make sure that in temps that cold, you drive the car very easily until everything gets up to working temperature... probably 15-20 minutes when it's that cold.

thanks guys, i will keep a close eye on it & see what happens.
Not a Problem
I have not had the oil control piston replaced and the ticking noise has gone away. Both local dealers say the oil control piston problem was an older Boxter issue and has been corrected. I now tend to think the problem was a lifter not "inflating" due to cold oil. I still baby the beast (keep it under 3,000 rpm) unitl the water temp comes off the peg and keep it under 4,000 rpm until the water temp is at normal operating temp for a few minutes.
It's good to remember that the coolant comes up to temp much faster than the oil in these cars - depending on the ambient temperature, but on very cold days like mentioned above, I would recommend giving it at least 7-10 minutes past the coolant coming up to temperature before really getting my foot into the loud pedal.

How exactly does the "ticking" sound like? Currently when my car is cold I can hear some kind of ticking sound coming from the engine compartment that increases in tempo as engine speed increases. If I step on the clutch say around 45MPH and put it in neutral, the car glides and engine is idle, the ticking sound goes away - so it's probably nothing wheel related. The sound goes away after the car is warmed up though and I haven't felt anything wrong with the car.
Does that sound like the "ticking sound" discussed here?
