Hi Everyone
Im doing some shopping for a 987
Cayman S
and just got the PPI Results, Looking for some feedback as to how severe these items are.
Biggest issue that mechanic can't confirm is that he is seeing a oil drip on the timing chain case , but can't see where its coming from.
As per mechanics test drive, the car runs great and has zero paintwork
Overrun Show 1 event in level 3 4 5 , but it occurred almost 2000 hours ago, so I would imagine that didn't damage anything . Body looks great from exterior and interior is mostly perfect , minus a leather repair on driver seat.
Thanks!
The over revs shown are likely a software glitch that has been reported here before. It's actually impossible to have 1 event in any range because these are ignition cycles not truly events. Therefore not an issue. What would trouble me is the oil leak. That could be an oil seal from either the RMS or
IMS
, both of which require the transmission to be removed to fix. Not sure what that costs but I'd worry about it and would likely pass as a result unless I could get a couple thousand off. Then when it were apart I'd replace the clutch assemble while they were in there. Good luck with what ever you decide.
Hmm interesting info on the OverRev... as for the leak , the mechanic said its on the pass side towards the timing chain cover and that it could be splashing from the drain
plug
that is leaking, but he can't say with any certainty without cleaning it and watching it. He was pretty sure that it was not an RMS or
IMS
Well that's good news but it would still worry me. These cars are typically NOT leakers in my experience. Keep us posted and wait to see if more "mechanical" folks respond since I'm not particularly that way. Just a endless reader of all things Porsche.
Budman is right, these engines usually do not leak. That would be a point of concern. As he said, common leak
points
are the rear end seals (
IMS
and RM) and sometimes the valve covers.
I would also not be happy with the error codes, not the overrevs but the others.
How many miles on this car?
Car is 59k miles .... As per mechanic, error codes are a nonissue, just from the
battery
draining. If it is a RMS , i assume the drip can be lived with till the tranny needs to come out for a clutch. But he was pretty sure that the leak was not from RMS or
IMS
because of the location he saw it ... kinda hard to see from the photo where he is under the engine
My '08 CS had the rear main leaking when I purchased it. Local dealer tech was able to point it out immediately. Because your tech was hesitant to point out the exact cause, I would take Rear Main off the possibilities list. This is assuming our techs have similar training and troubleshooting skills.
Hi Everyone,
Wanted to follow up with the community, so inevitably my friend went ahead and purchased this car. We got it off the transporter last night and immediately started wrenching on it.
Installed New
Battery
Oil Change/Filter with M1 5w50
New Cabin Filter
New Engine Air Filter
As for previous oil leaks mentioned in my original post.
Leak #1 was caused by not having a crush washer installed when they did the previous oil change.
Leak #2 which was the questionable one... ends up being what i suspected as the
AOS
leaking. When I pulled the engine cover off, I saw the Oil Return line from the
AOS
is clearly covered in oil and dirt and there was a small pool of oil on the valve head directly below the
AOS
. Looks like next weekend , we will DIY Replace that part out and this car will be good as new.
Only actual issue car has at the moment , is that the I can't change the clock time.... Anyone ever have the button fail? Maybe I can use a durametric to actually change the clock. Seems kinda crazy to have to replace a cluster because the button isn't working. All in All, the car looks great, drives great and the PPI was very accurate as to what was not right on this car.
Thanks!
glad you're already progressing on getting the car better and back on the road!
