Same here, when I replaced my suspension it was the drop link bolt on both sides that was the bitch.

Suggestion · Original poster

A couple of years ago I had the 'fun' of replacing my front drop links and had to take the struts off the car, complete with the wheel carriers to use a lot of heat and hammers to beat out the old drop links.

I had problems with one of the top mounts corroded to the strut - had to saw it off to get the washers etc to use on the replacement strut.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

A couple of years ago I had the 'fun' of replacing my front drop links and had to take the struts off the car, complete with the wheel carriers to use a lot of heat and hammers to beat out the old drop links. At no point did the struts come loose from the wheel carriers and i reckon they're totally stuck. I now have some coilovers to go on the car but I reckon it's going to be a bear of a job to release the old struts from the carriers. Does anyone have any tips to make this job go more smoothly? I'm not bothered about preserving the old struts, if the only solution is to cut them, then that's OK.

POST 2Original post

Just done mine which were last changed in 2009 and they slid straight out with a bit of wriggling. I was thinking the same as you! I dont think cutting them will help as the hub clamp wraps completely around the strut. If stuck just use something like a cold chisel in the slot at the back of the hub carrier to open it up slightly - be gentle should only need opening a tiny bit just to break any hold. I had problems with one of the top mounts corroded to the strut - had to saw it off to get the washers etc to use on the replacement strut. Ian

POST 3Original post

Same here, when I replaced my suspension it was the drop link bolt on both sides that was the bitch. When that was eventually removed (strut off, take to local garage with air tools) the strut came out easily.

POST 4Original post

I'm right in the middle of this as we speak. Separated the struts and hub carriers at the weekend. Even on my 20 year old rusted stuff they slid out no problem. As above, bash a chisel into the split in the hub carrier to widen it then spray a bit of WD in. I'll wager that this job will be the least of your problems when stripping suspension and brakes down. I had way more bother with seized bolts and things.

POST 5Original post

Also just done this. I also bashed a chisel down the split in the wheel carrier to force it apart a little. It seems a bit of gunk/corrosion builds up around the edges of the old strut and makes it tight. My top tip is, before re-fitting the new strut, get a half moon or round file in the wheel carrier and some sandpaper and make sure you remove all the corrosion and crap from where the strut slides in. If its not properly clean you end up with the new strut jammed half in and not moving
