Suggestion

When I dropped the tranny to remove the IMS seal I noticed the flywheel had excessive play beyond the recommended specs so I replaced it with a dual mass Luk.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1Original post

Hello guys, I was out for a fall drive today and noticed when I was in Sport mode and during hard accelerating, every time I took my foot off the accelerator quickly I felt a clunk (felt like the engine or tranny was moving). I tried replicating this with the Sport button off and it did not happen. If anyone has experienced with this I would like to hear what your diagnosis was. Motor and tranny mounts are original, it's an 06 cayman s and has 23500 miles. Thanks, Chris651

POST 2Original post

I would start by checking the CV joints. Not sure why you wouldn't get the clunk with Sport mode off, though, unless you weren't revving as high.

POST 3Original post

The other culprit might be the motor mount bushing. Even though you have low mileage the rubber bushing may have failed due to age. You can buy the bushing separately and using a press install it. I show how to do it here Sport Engine Mount - Articles . Rob

POST 4Original post

Sounds like you need to spend a bit of money to replace the engine mount. It is expected as a wear and tear item after all. I suppose Porsche designed it with that in mind. It seems like it's a little less common in other cars, as BMW owners etc tend to find it ridiculous that engine mounts need replacement for a relatively new car. But then, to be fair, our engine mounts are just a little over 100 dollars for parts only. Generally doesn't take much time to replace either. I'm getting mine replaced in two weeks as well. FYI my car is a 2008 car with just over 35000km on the odometer, but I sit in traffic a lot and do drive on pretty bumpy roads here. Either case, have your mechanic check to see if that's the reason. Otherwise control arms are usually another source of common clunks/rattles.

POST 5Original post

Appreciate your responses, I'll be changing the oil, washing and waxing next week and putting her in the garage for the winter. I'll add motor mount and cv joint check to the list of things to do. Positive side I'll be spending more time in my favourite room of the house. I'll keep you posted on my findings. Rob, thanks for the motor mount post.

POST 6Original post

Sorry for the late response with the clunking noise I heard when giving gas in sport mode; with our short summers I was to busy driving the car lol. I replaced the motor mount the old one wasn't torn but the rubber had tiny cracks in it. When I dropped the tranny to remove the IMS seal I noticed the flywheel had excessive play beyond the recommended specs so I replaced it with a dual mass Luk. I'm not sure if it was the mount or the flywheel, I'm leaning towards the flywheel but no more clunk, just happy driving

POST 8Original post

Glad you fixed it! It's weird, I know this isn't about the clutch ... but ... I feel that based on what I have heard so far (at least locally), these cars' flywheel don't tend to last that long. The flywheel pretty much gotta go in every clutch change.

POST 9Original post

This is a very noob question so sorry in advance. I have the same clunk but mine is a PDK . Do I have a flywheel or this is just in the manual. I have low miles but I live in florida and the car is 2009 boxster . Thanks
