headliner coming down on
2008 cayman s
. called a couple of places and looks like it's going to be $ 550 to 800 depending on material used.
can i rip the whole thing out and spray it with rhinolining ? or better yet plasti dip it ? if someone can find a way to replace the IMSB without cracking the engine, why no an inexpensive fix for this ! why do i need a headliner anyway. ripping it out will reduced the center gravity and give me better 0-100.
ok now i'm being serious. i live in orlando florida, anyone has recommendations an a shop with good workmanship ?
TIA
Vic
A standard velour headliner is usually $250-$300, but I think the
Cayman
has an alcantara headliner, which costs considerably more.
Friend of mine with an 08
Cayman S
just had the same thing happen to him. His was not Alcantara, but had it replaced with Alcantara. If I recall he told me it cost between $850-900, material and labor, at the indie that both of us use. And I also think that he did more than just the roof liner. Now that I think about it, my friend said that he had been having rattles, so the had the indie completely take all the roof and hatch trim off and felt tape everything and put it back. He says all the rattles he had are now gone. So the price above included a lot more than just replacing the liner.
My guy did it for $200 + tax in Largo FL. Mine was Sand Beige and the new fabric color match was perfect - and a little fuzzier so it has more of an alcantara feel. My only complaint was that he scratched the trim in several places. But I have touch-up paint - so no biggie. If your's is black - probably not a big concern.
Also, if you are handy - you could either DIY or just remove the liner shell yourself for the shop to reupholster.
Alcantara can be a nice upgrade - but I couldn't get it in a shade that matched my seats or interior and costs about 2-3 times the cost in my neck of the woods.
RSchwerer and Lark are right - need to keep an eye out for good workmanship as half of my interior panels were out and its a good opportunity to hunt for those rattles that drive you nuts.
I don't recommend a DIY as its really messy and labour intensive - in my eyes at least
have a look at these threads from our experience with this issue - gives you the answers and pics too!

I just got my car back today. Headliner was starting to come loose around the visors, so I had a local upholstery shop redo it and the A-pillar in alcantara. $585 total. I'm happy with the way it came out, but I might take it back to have some of the interior hatch and storage areas covered as well.
If you decide to do it yourself you can buy real Alcantara from here:

Alcantara is the name for the Euro version of Ultra Suede, they're all licensed from a Japanese company.
