I have since removed it and fitted all metal ones instead.
Leading evidence: 'Install metal ones instead' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Check site faq' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. -Stock element flows as much as aftermarket when clean(this is the key)

Personally for stock to mildly modified engines, I like to run the stock element and know that it's doing a better job at filtration and just change it more often.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Is this a new style intake for 996/997's?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=koBU8NhbNtY&feature=fvsr
Looks good! watch the vid, it will show the dual cone intake during the video.
I read Rampino's thread on
https://www.6speedonline.com/forums/...ing-links.html
and decided to give it a shot.
On having a look at the lowering links , I figured the components of the links shouldn't be that difficult to come by so I had a look around a few local suppliers and found the ball and socket joints at a supplier who supplies fittings for gas struts (like the kind used to hold up bonnets and boot lids) They cost about $5 each so the required 8 cost me about $40.
I sourced the 50mm M8 studs and nuts at a nut and bolt shop for a total cost of about $6 so total cost for lowering links about $46 or R500 in South African money.
lowering link components
So I had my links and started with the install.
When I had the first link out I realized it would be quite easy to 3d print a slightly longer version of the standard plastic link.
OEM link, partly dismantled
So I 3d printed a link about 5mm longer then the standard one (5mm was mentioned in Rampino's thread)
3d printed link (yellow) , 5mm longer than standard (black)
With a bit of difficulty all the fittings can be fitted to the 3d printed component.
The 5mm extension produces a noticeable drop in the suspension.
I didn't take a proper before pic, but managed to find an previous side view.
Both pics are at "normal" level. (Top pic is after)
Before and After
The 3d printed link will be strong enough as they really transfer very little load , but I'm not sure about durability. It may deteriorate with time. The material I used was PLA. I printed only 1 link and test fitted it on the front left corner. I have since removed it and fitted all metal ones instead.
The G-code file is about 4MB and the STL about 150kB.
PM me if you would like a copy of the file, as the file type cannot be attached to this post.
doesn't seem to be anything protecting the cones from the engine heat? I thought the point of a CAI was to get some extra horses by reducing heat-soak? or maybe this isn't sold as a CAI?
It won't break, there is very little stress on the link. Thic specific link will probably deteriorate after about a year as the PLA material I used is bio-degradable. If you printed it out of ABS it would probably last forever. It takes quite a while to print and I had already bought the stuff for the metal ones when I realised how easy the part would be to print. This was just "proof of concept". I printed only one link and test fitted it on the front left, I have since removed the printed link and fitted the metal ones all round.
there has been many intake kits from k&n, fabspeed and others
i dont think any of them offer better performance gains than stock. stock filter is big and draws cold air out of engine bay. these days, everyone has dyno claims. but i would attribute those gains from variance in dyno pulls.
I used a "WANHAO Duplicator 4". If you're interested, I've also printed a oil filter removal tool for my Cayenne Turbo :
https://www.6speedonline.com/forums/...lter-tool.html
and also a rear main seal installation tool for my Cayman S , it's somewhere in this thread :

I got this reply from a comment I posted on the vid:

. You can call us directly at 215-646-495. I do have a system available for your 996 Carrera and the power gains are immense. Fabspeed now has the Comp intake available for the 996 Carrera, 996 GT3, 997 Carrera, 997.2 Carrera, and we are working on the intake for the 997 GT3.
I went to the Fabspeed website & saw the Comp intake for the 996 and 997 and they do not look like the one in the video. The one in the video looks like its the GT3 comp intake, but the car in the video is a 997 C2s right? Will the comp GT3 intake fit the 996 & 997 C2's?

X2, If there was such "immense" gains, I'm sure Porsche would've been using them already on their Cup of GT3 cars already.
I remember reading an article objectively testing the different filters on a flow bench and this is what I got from it:
-Stock element flows as much as aftermarket when clean(this is the key)
-Stock filters better than any aftermarket element(common sense)
-Aftermarket is often reusable and washable
-Stock element can have it's restrictions once modified engines come into the mix(heads, cams, FI, etc)
-Subpar intake designs can affect overall flow characteristics of stock system vs aftermarket(such as tube bends, accordians, intake resonators, etc.)
-Aftermarket can lose hp from heat soak if not shielded properly from heat
-Aftermarket can shift the powerband and modify certain peak attributes(can be good or bad depending on application)
Personally for stock to mildly modified engines, I like to run the stock element and know that it's doing a better job at filtration and just change it more often. If there is a miminal 1-2 hp loss on stock, it's not enough to justify it for me.
On the other hand, if I'm driving a not so well engineered car(think American, no offense), I might be inclined to get an aftermarket unit if I feel the intake design was a subpar design to begin with and can be proven.
I see a lot of guys buy "presents" for their cars. Just remember the engine is like a big pump. If you are not increasing the flow on the output side substantially(and assuming the manufacturer engineered a proper intake to match the current engine's output) I don't really see a need.
Just my $.03
who cares about power gain if any.IMO..I didn't expect any from the the red tube so it wouldn't make any diff. for me..but this one look sweet..I want one if it were available for the 996 c2..
Hey Guys,
The intake in the video is designed for the 2009+ DFI cars, and it will not work on the 996 and 997.1 cars. Fabspeed does have an intake designed for the 996/997 as you can see in the pictures I attached. If anyone has any questions please feel free to email me directly. Special pricing for 6_speed members.

The dual conical system that we have for the 996 GT3 and the new 997.2 DFI car will not fit on a 996/997 because the way the throttle body comes out is different.

Hey Mkc2, yes the Dual Carbon Fiber Y Pipe Intake will only fit the 996 GT3 and 2009+ 997.2 cars. As you can see from the photo that Jeremy posted, the single tube Competition Intake is the one for the 996 and 997.1. Those cars only have one Air intake snorkel on the trunk lid so we followed the OEM design. The Competition intake for the 966/997.1 really does work well and just improves the overall performance and feel of the car.

Hey Sosoomi1, that affect your seeing is the HD camera picking up the LED lights in the recording rate. It is not the vehicle but it does look cool. You wont believe how many people ask about this and want it

Fly996, we have the Competition Intake in stock and ready to ship. It includes all the hardware (Carbon Intake, Heat shield, Brackets, hoses) and installation instructions for an easy install that you can do at home. PM me or Jeremy or give us a call directly at [phone removed] if you are interested. Group buys are welcome
thanks
