Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1Original post

I have designed tools to enable changing the 987.1 era IMSB with the engine in the car. I began working on it when Boiler Inspector's IMSB failed n I had to split the engine cases to change a $30-/+ part. I bought my first CS hoping the IMSB was bad, but no it was a rod brg. I modified it out of the car n bought a second 2006CS to prove the process was doable insitu. It's old world hand craftsmanship n my results are equal to the factory in quality of bore finish. The tool is designed to capture the chips which are cleaned as the hole is being enlarged. I pulled the sump off after flushing and blowing out the area and found no chip in the sump. My "in car trial engine" has only 28,000 miles and of course the bearing was like new but I wanted to ensure I could do it in the car. Some pics are attached.

POST 2Original post

BIG Question: What would it cost a poor schmo like myself?

POST 3Original post

There are qualifications. Does it have minimum crankshaft end play? Nearly zero leak down? 120,000 miles? Then it's a candidate n I'll save you 66% of a rebuild

POST 4Original post

What kind of bearing are you replacing the original with? I assume it's slightly larger than the original?

POST 5Original post

Currently I have used the Micro Blue ceramic. 10,000 miles on my DD currently. Ceramics claim 300% more durability. Testing in progress. It's the same 6305 size.

POST 6Original post

Just an update in response to "mention" on another thread. It's attention to detail that gives the best results and most satisfaction. I've noticed some of the other specialists are now providing what appears to be just a standard O-ring in their "upgrades". The factory special designed O-ring is not that expensive. I've sourced as close to the original O-ring as I could find. This requires changing dimensions of the flange in the O-ring area to get a proper seal. I've used the O-ring mfgr's suggested dimensions for these clearances and will advise of improvement in the sealing accomplished. The installation of even the stock flange requires some finesse to prevent pinching off some of the seal and having leakage. My original modification has 12,000 miles and used the stock ring but obviously it was stretched with the larger bore. It's not leaking at present, but knowing how picky some people can be, I'm doing a 110% evaluation of my parts. Not ready for prime time, but ready for a Saturday morning cameo appearance or 2. Now if I had 100 new flanges machined and waiting...........

POST 7Original post

This is very interesting,i for one am very impressed that u are able to do this procedure as many are stating the engine has to come apart. Keep us tuned as the miles go with updates ect.I only have 65000 miles on my 06 but i am already thinking about changing it out and if i have to split the case i may as well get another low miler instead.

POST 8Original post

Currently 22,000 miles since rebuild completed n early 2015. Includes 4,000 mile road trip to Texas. Still smiling n driving daily. No issues!

POST 9Original post

If the bearing is the same size, then why are you having to machine the bore? How are you modifying the flange to accept the new/ improved O ring?

POST 10Original post

'06-08 3.4 have larger bearings than earlier models and Porsche AG didn't make the access hole larger. It requires a totally new flange to maintain proper integrity of the assembly.
