Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Reported cause
It turned out to be some electrical fault which the OPC fixed for under £100......
Leading evidence: 'some electrical fault' (1 discussions report identifying this cause; no attributable repair resolution). Across 1 matching discussions, the most frequently mentioned possible cause is 'some electrical fault' (1 discussions; 1 report identifying it and 0 suggest it). The most frequently discussed action is 'Check should tell you what's wrong' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

dropped into halfords to check if it was the gas and it was fine on the pressure gauge so no leaks.

Suspected cause
It is most likely one of the temperature sensors - probably the interior sensor, just below the vent on the LHS of the dash.

Suggestion
Afterall, even in winter you can run the ac on "Lo" and chill the air even more (or more likely run the ac to dehumidify condensation etc, but in hot mode).

If that has been damaged in the re-spray would that upset the heating electrics (eg if it thinks external air is cold it would just route that into the car to reduce temp rather than run the AC?)
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

hi all
jumped in the car for a drive today and put the AC on - waited for the cold air to come but it never did!
played with the settings with no luck - it was mostly blowing HOT air. i turned the AC off and just put the fan up to full and that was hot too which seems odd. a couple of times it seemed to start cooling for a minute but then went back to hot.
dropped into halfords to check if it was the gas and it was fine on the pressure gauge so no leaks.
any ideas? just had front bumper re-sprayed and all wheels refurbed so has been a bit of fiddling done to the car. could it be a sensor/electrical issue :?:
rads look to be in decent condition too.
cheers
I had this on my 996 (or something similar) when driving down to the 'Ring - it just stopped working - fortunately I just put the roof down for the rest of the journey

I believe the external air temp sensor is just behind the front bumper on the offside. If that has been damaged in the re-spray would that upset the heating electrics (eg if it thinks external air is cold it would just route that into the car to reduce temp rather than run the AC?)
Just a thought.
Not really relevant if the unit is in manual mode and the ac button activated.

Thanks for the replies!
Just done a few long drives over the weekend and had some more strange goings on with the AC! Switched it on a few times hoping for it to have miraculously fixed itself (wishful thinking I know!) and it did actually blow cold a few times for upto 30 mins before going hot again. Sometimes it would blow hot then cool in cycles every second or two which makes me think it could be a fault in the mixing unit - if such a thing even exists?!!
Any technical geniuses out there have an opinion on that?
Thanks

It may also be the sensor in the blower intake, but that's a pig to get to IIRC. Then again, it might be the control module itself.
A proper diagnostic check should tell you what's wrong. If you are near me (I note you mentioned Northway) I'd be happy to do it for you.
However, if you have an early 996, then you can do quite a lot of diagnosis through the control panel itself. See the attached.
